Sarah Grunder Ruiz | Opposites Attract to Revitalize a Family-Run Pub

January 4, 2024

1–What is the title of your latest release?

LAST CALL AT THE LOCAL

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Opposites attract when a free-spirited American singer-songwriter with ADHD teams up with a charming Irishman with OCD to revitalize his family’s pub.

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

Our hero, Jack, is the brother of the hero of my second book, Luck and Last Resorts, so I really had no choice when I decided to write a book about him!

4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

Absolutely. Raine is bubbly, fun, musical, and the sweetest friend you could ask for!

5–What are three words that describe your hero?

Irish, tattooed, cat dad

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

I did a LOT of research on OCD for this one. The most fascinating information I learned was about how Exposure Response Prevention Therapy works. It is incredibly intense, challenging, and unorthodox at times, but highly effective.

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

Edit as I draft!

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Extra toasty Cheez-Itz. I can’t say it’s really a “foodie” indulgence, but I always have a box in the pantry.

9–Describe your writing space/office!

My sunroom is my favorite room in the house. It has my desk, my books, plants, candles, instruments hanging on the walls. I absolutely love spending time there.

10–Who is an author you admire?

Sarah Hogle! I will read anything that woman writes.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

Untethered Soul by Michael A. Singer.

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

My literary agent called to tell me my publisher made an offer on Last Call at the Local right before I was going to hop on a zoom meeting for work. Yeah, I didn’t hear a word that was said in that meeting.

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

I read a lot of nonfiction! I’m a big fan of popular science and self-help stuff.

14–What’s your favorite movie?

Pride and Prejudice 2005 version.

15–What is your favorite season?

It’s a tie between Fall and Summer.

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

I love to reflect upon my year and have a quiet day with myself and my family.

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

One of my most recent hyperfixations is astrology, and I always start Monday morning with The Astrology of the Week Podcast from Chani Nicholas.

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Korean!

19–What do you do when you have free time?

Watch hockey! Go Canes!

20–What can readers expect from you next?

I have no idea! Only time will tell.

LAST CALL AT THE LOCAL by Sarah Grunder Ruiz

Last Call at the Local

Opposites attract when a free-spirited American singer-songwriter with ADHD teams up with a charming Irishman to revitalize his family’s pub in the next heartfelt romance from the author of Luck and Last Resorts.

Raine Hart is used to the challenges of living with ADHD. It’s why she ditched her life in Boston to busk around Europe as a traveling musician. No boss. No schedule. No one to disappoint but herself. But when a careless mistake in Ireland leaves her unable to perform, she sees no other option but to give up her nomadic life.

Since inheriting the Local, Jack Dunne has wanted to make the pub his own. But the baggage of running a family business and the intrusive thoughts that stem from his OCD make changing things a challenge.

Over a pint with handsome, tattooed Jack, Raine accidentally insults him and the pub. Instead of taking offense, Jack, impressed by her vision of what the pub could be, offers her a job bringing it to life.

But when Raine and Jack develop feelings for one another their opposite lifestyles won’t accommodate, it becomes clear the pub isn’t the only thing that needs reinventing. As the end of their business collaboration draws near, they’ll have to find a way past the limits they’ve placed on themselves or let go of a love that could last a lifetime.
