Miranda Mundt | An emotionally-guarded lesbian blood witch learns how to feel again

July 10, 2025

1–What is the title of your latest release?

MUTED: VOLUME ONE!

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

An emotionally guarded lesbian blood witch learns how to feel again thanks to the efforts of a charismatic fire witch as well as the flower demon that she accidentally summoned and is trying to hide from her family.

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

New Orleans and swamps are inherently powerfully magical places so to me having it as a city that has a tie to a magical parallel world makes sense. Also setting it in the modern day I felt would help the audience slip right into the core of the story without having to explain too much!

4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

I would hang out with her, sure. I think the issue is that Camille wouldn’t want to hang out with ME, haha, at least not in volume one since she is at her most reserved and introverted. And also, I don’t have the same level of convincing charm that Nyra has to pull her out of her shell and get her to experience things.

5–What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Reserved. Stubborn. Compulsive.

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

Over the course of the entire series, I learned a lot about myself and what I was capable of. I learned how much I can accomplish and that my work truly has value far beyond what I was giving it credit for. I also learned that I had a lot more old emotional wounds than I realized that I had to sort of patch up alongside working on everything.

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

This question is a bit harder to answer due to the nature of what Muted originally was. Muted was a Webtoon Original which meant that it had to update with 40 panels (which would average out to about 8 drawn pages) per week. Which meant that I was laying down railroad tracks as I went with no time to go back and correct things.

That being said, despite having to publish things basically as soon as they were made until I had the full story completed, when I was putting the first 27 weekly “episodes” into the book I found that I didn’t really have to change all that much and I’m proud of how it all built upon itself!

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

I generally indulge too much due to the hours that I work and being unwilling to pull myself away from work, so I tend to just eat what is close or easy to deliver. I would say the ultimate indulgence for me at the moment is actually taking the time to cook something myself. Extra indulgent if it is steak with some asparagus.

9–Describe your writing space/office!

A corner of the kitchen with my back to the side door, haha! I got a very long-standing desk to hold all of my various drinks as well as my two monitors. I have a tall bookshelf stuffed full of books I loved and ones that my friends have done and a turntable sitting on a record holding stand. This was originally intended as a sort of breakfast-nook space, so I have three big windows that I have pink shades on that give my whole space a soft pink glow during the day.

10–Who is an author you admire?

Kamome Shirahama, Kit Trace and Kat Flynn, Míriam Bonastre Tur, and Suspu.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

Not a singular book but Berserk (Kentaro Miura)

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

I’m going to start the story about the comic getting picked up by Webtoon just because I think that is a more fun story to read, haha.

In 2018 I put up the first episode a week before they announced that there was going to be a contest with a lot of potential prize money, so I pulled down that episode to re-enter it into the contest. It put me on the fast track of doing way more per update than I originally intended and I was shocked by the number of people that were connecting with it! I didn’t know that many people looking at my work was even possible… And then I didn’t place in the contest at all, HAHA. I did get an honorable mention though, and I was content to continue working on the story on my own. But then my soon-to-be editor Bre Boswell reached out to me and asked me if I’d like to have Muted as a Webtoon Original and I agreed! So I reworked the first 10 episodes that I had made up to that point and the version of Muted that you see today launched in March 2019 and concluded with 125 weekly episodes/chapters in 2022!

After that I found a very lovely agent that I realized after I signed to her had actually reached out to me back in 2019 and at the time I had been too busy to consider the thought at all- so I’m very glad that she was willing to have me after so many years! (Hi Stephanie!) and together we wrapped up the finished version of Muted into a nice pitch and I’m so grateful to have been picked up by Ten Speed Graphic! They have been the best.

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

Horror or Fantasy

14–What’s your favorite movie?

Moulin Rouge

15–What is your favorite season?

Spring

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

Go to an escape room!

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

Sad Boyz Podcast, The Substance, Severance, This Thing Between Us: A Novel

by Gus Moreno

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

I’m a sucker for pizza any given day but I’m obsessed with tikka masala right now.

19–What do you do when you have free time?

Play video games and watch movies

20–What can readers expect from you next?

Hopefully the print version of LoveBot which is the scifi comic I created with my wife! We intend to overhaul almost all the art to make it exclusive to print when that happens. Other than that, I have a lot of other stories brewing but they are a secret for now. Be sure to check out Muted Volume 1 and Volume 2 and hopefully the rest of the series soon to follow!!

MUTED: VOLUME 1 by Miranda Mundt

A summoning ritual gone awry kicks off a lush, witchy graphic novel series with joyful streaks of found family and polyamorous sapphic romance—in this first volume of the hit Webtoon coming-of-age story, now with bonus content.

It has been thirteen years since the mysterious fire at the Severin family manor that killed Camille’s mother and twin sister, and the last thing Camille wants to do is return to her old home deep in the swamps of Louisiana. But she doesn’t have a choice. Deeply ingrained family tradition and Matriarch Athalie—Camille’s coldhearted aunt and head of the Severin household—demand it.

When the time comes for Camille to perform the demon-summoning blood ritual that every prospective matriarch in her family must complete, she is afraid of making a mistake. No matter how hard she tries to be a witch worthy of the Severin name, nothing is ever good enough for her aunt. Camille has practiced and practiced, but instead of the beat of demonic wings or the snap of talons, her blood calls forth evergreen vines and leaves. Terrified of what this might mean, she flees into the swamps.

But her failed ritual gives her something precious: time away from Aunt Athalie. Time to spend with her beloved familiar Toben and kindly cousin Silvia. And—unbeknownst to her—time to fall in love, discover the truth of her magic, reunite with long lost family, work through her grief, and solve the mystery of who killed her mother and sister.

Complete with an exclusive bonus chapter, this first volume includes episodes 1-27 of the highly popular Webtoon webcomic Muted.
