1–What is the title of your latest release?
FLIPPING. It’s a paranormal romance with a lot of humor and heart in it.
2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
A sassy ghost defends his haunted house and heart from a psychic house flipper.
3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
Flipping more or less decided where it wanted to be set. I penned a few opening lines from the ghost’s perspective, and I knew three things automatically: Charley was deliciously sarcastic, he was dead, and the book would be set in Savannah, Georgia.
4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?
Absolutely. He’s a delightful ghost and a fabulous cook.
5–What are three words that describe your protagonist?
Sarcastic, loyal, haunted
6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?
I ended up researching laws regarding buried treasure, and I’m leaving that as it is to avoid spoilers.
7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
Wait until I’m totally done.
8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
Be prepared to be disgusted. It’s fried okra fresh from the garden when I can get it.
9–Describe your writing space/office!
I will write just about anywhere, but usually I’m either at my cluttered desk in the bedroom or I’m outside at the river using a handy picnic table.
10–Who is an author you admire?
TJ Klune is one of my recent favorites. I first read one of his zany fantasy books (The Lightning-Struck Heart) back in March of 2020 and it was the first time I’d laughed with a book in probably ten years. I smile at a lot of things, but with Klune I was literally sob-laughing.
11–Is there a book that changed your life?
Neil Gaiman’s American Gods. That was the very first time I realized that the real world and fantasy/paranormal mixed well in written fiction, and suddenly I realized contemporary fantasy could be a thing. I’m sure there were many others I could have read before then, but that was the one that most influenced my writing.
12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
My gut reaction was “Are you sure you want to publish this? I mean, really? You do? Seriously? That’s your final answer?” So you might say I was a little flabbergasted and then happy.
13–What’s your favorite genre to read?
I love adult fantasy, and if there’s a strong romance angle in there, I’m even happier.
14–What’s your favorite movie?
I honestly don’t have one! I enjoy some movies, but I don’t tend to watch them particularly often.
15–What is your favorite season?
Fall. Around here, it’s the only time I don’t melt.
16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
There’s a funny answer for that. My birthday is actually in July. I hate July. It’s hot. It’s humid. I also suffer from reverse SAD, which means that for me, the only way I can maintain a positive outlook on life is if I turn my room into a cave and hibernate in it most of the summer. So, I decided to celebrate my birthday in October instead of July. I usually cook a few things I like or find a way to head up to the river or go to the lake.
17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
I’ve been hanging out with Our Flag Means Death this summer and highly recommend it. Hilarious, sweet, and delightful.
18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
I really like traditional Southern food. It’s not good for me, but I like it.
19–What do you do when you have free time?
I garden, I hike, and I paint. I love watercolor. Sometimes it loves me. I try not to fight with it.
20–What can readers expect from you next?
I’m working on the sequel to Flipping at the moment, and I have a few other fantasy romance projects in the wings that I hope will be published soon.
