J.R. Thorn | 20 Questions: UNICORN SHIFTER ACADEMY

July 28, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release?

UNICORN SHIFTER ACADEMY by J.R. Thorn

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Taste the rainbow takes on a whole new meaning when your mates are Unicorn Shifters…”

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

Unicorn Shifter Academy came to fruition when my muse entertained her natural meanderings, taking me through the Enchanted Forest where bunnies are deadly, and unicorns are hot. She always leads me astray, but I happily follow her into the chaos!

4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Always! All the protagonists in the Blood Stone Universe are kick-A heroines I’d love to hang out with.

5–What are three words that describe your protagonist?

 “Mischievous, stubborn, and spunky!”

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

I’ve written and published over thirty books, but each book teaches me something new. Unicorn Shifter Academy taught me not to take things too seriously and to have some good-natured rainbow fun once in a while.

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I edit as I draft, yes.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Japanese strawberry cake! So light and fluffy. Yum.

9–Describe your writing space/office!

I used to have a whole room organized for my writing space, but then I had a baby, so now I squeeze into the guest bedroom or I write on the couch and tune out the screaming! Mom life.

10–Who is an author you admire?

Nalini Singh is my celebrity crush, as well as Susan Ee!

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

So many books changed my life, the ones that come to mind are Feast of Souls, Guildhunter, and Brightly Burning. They all taught me how to use my imagination and are early building blocks of my muse’s style.

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

I decided to self-publish when I realized a publisher wasn’t going to take a risk on my work after years of rejections because angels weren’t “in.” I’m not someone who gives up on my dreams. Now, publishing is my living and I would never be able to do this as my job if I had been traditionally published, so I’m grateful every day that I never did find a publisher to take me on!

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

Fantasy Romance

14–What’s your favorite movie?

Lord of the Rings

15–What is your favorite season?

Winter. I’m from an island and didn’t see snow until I was sixteen, so winter always has a little magic for me.

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

Quietly at home with Japanese Cake!

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I love sci-fi shows and one of my recent favorites is Altered Carbon. I hate that they canceled it!

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Anything my husband cooks for me! He’s the best cook.

19–What do you do when you have free time?

I play video games, although I don’t get much free time these days. I met my husband on a video game when I was seventeen and the rest is history!

20–What can readers expect from you next?

I’m a prolific writer, so the next books readers can look forward to from me is the conclusion of Fortune Academy, Fortune Fae Academy (not to be confused with each other!), more episodes in Dark Arts Academy on Vella, and my co-writes such as the next book in Noir Reformatory and Hell Fae! (I don’t sleep much!)

UNICORN SHIFTER ACADEMY by J.R. Thorn

Unicorn Shifter Academy #1

Unicorn Shifter Academy

There are three rules at Unicorn Shifter Academy.

1. Keep unicorns a secret.
2. Never compare horn sizes.
3. No girls allowed.

Whoopsie. I broke all three.

You’d think that unicorn shifters would be chicks, right? Yeah, me too, but turns out unicorns are always males.

Until me, that is.

I’ve never shown a drop of magic in my life, even though I’m from a family of powerful witches. Well, my parents had the grand idea of performing an awakening ceremony courtesy of Fortune Academy’s best and brightest… and I think it worked a bit too well. Imagine their surprise when I sprouted a horn. A FREAKING HORN.

Not. Cool.

Turns out there was some serious rainbow hanky-panky in my family history and now the unicorn shifters are pissed off I’m in on their secret community.

Seriously, spilling the magic beans is the least of my worries.

Being a unicorn means bonding with seven other shifters for life—a life I never asked for. And since I’m the first girl in a male-only tradition, I expect this could cause some serious problems, especially because these guys are obsessed with me right off the bat. Like overly protective to the extreme. A girl can take care of herself, you know?

Thing is, we better get our act together because this Academy isn’t just for show. Unicorns are the only creatures who stand between good and evil on a cosmic scale. A monster lurks in a terrifying pit in the center of the Enchanted Forest.
And it looks like somebody let it out.

The clock starts now to trap the beast before it eats my home realm as a snack. I’ve got my big girl panties on—even if they are rainbow-colored.

Unicorn Shifter Academy is a Paranormal Shifter Romance novel with mature scenes and all the rainbow glitter unicorn shifter, uh… horns… a girl could possibly want—no choosing required. Since this is a series, book one ends in a cliffhanger.
