What do you do for a living?
I’m a private detective working for Decorah Security. I used to be with the Howard County, Maryland, police force, but Frank Decorah made me a better offer.
Where do you live?
Right now, I’m on assignment in St. Stephens, a small town on Maryland’s Eastern shore—which happens to be my hometown. Until the 1950s you could only get here by taking a boat across Chesapeake Bay. Now there’s a four-and-a-half-mile bridge—a veritable highway of tourism leading to our quiet old town full of shops, restaurants, inns and real estate offices.
I used to think of this place as the backwater of the universe, but it’s changed a lot since the bridge. Wealthy people including my current client, Lee Tillman, have scooped up the old mansion houses along the river. Lee came here, seemingly out of nowhere, about thirty years ago. He’s a little man with a big chip on his shoulder. He hired Decorah Security to find out who’s trying to kill him.
You sound like working with Tillman is a PITA
You got that right. But I’m kind of indebted to Lee. After my dad died, he gave Mom extra hours as his house cleaner and recommended her to other rich guys in town. He also financed my education at the University of Maryland. I paid him back, but he still acts like I’m at his beck and call. He would have sent my brother to the U of M, too. But Billy decided he’d rather hang around town and get into trouble.
Back to Lee. He got me out of bed this morning and called me over to his house for some kind of emergency. He told me to park in the woods where no one could see my car. But when I got here, he had vanished.
Did someone kill him between the phone call and when I got to his mansion? Or had he left on vacation like his calendar says? Too bad, there are plenty of murder suspects. Lee isn’t exactly the best liked guy in town.
Do you have a Significant Other?
Well, that’s a sore point. I thought my marriage was solid, but last year, I came home early and found my wife, Cindy, in bed with one of my fellow Howard County cops. We’re divorced now and thank the Lord we didn’t have any kids or pets. She’s the reason I wanted a change of scenery.
And would you believe, while I was searching Lee’s office, this girl named Sara Delaney I knew in high school walked in like she owned the place and put some papers in his filing cabinet. When we were teenagers, I could have nailed her in the back seat of my car. But I let her off easy because she was so sweet and innocent. Now she could be involved in Lee’s murder. The problem is, I’m still attracted to her, but I have to treat her as a suspect. Naturally, it’s hard to trust any woman after the fast one my wife pulled.
It gets more complicated. After Sara left, I followed her into town, and some guy tried to run her over with his pickup truck. Does that have something to do with my Lee Tillman problem? Or is there someone else after Sara?
I feel like I need to protect her, but that might mean getting involved. Does she remember that passionate night of hot sex where we didn’t go all the way? And what if she turns out like Cindy?
