Samantha Joyce | The devil’s daughter risks everything to get a falsely condemned boy out of hell

November 4, 2025

What is the title of your latest release?
NOT TODAY, SATAN

What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
The devil’s daughter risks everything to get a falsely condemned boy out of hell and ends up confronting all she thought she knew about her power and her future.

How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
I read Dante’s Inferno as a freshman in high school and was fascinated by the world Dante created, where the punishment fit the crime. I always knew I wanted to write my own re-telling. Then I decided I also wanted to write a fun YA rom-com and thought, “okay but what if I combine the two ideas?”

Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?
I think I’d want to hang with her, but I’d be intimidated by her. She’s a lot more outspoken than I am.

What are three words that describe your hero?
Stubborn, Kind, Sarcastic

What’s something you learned while writing this book?
I learned a lot about my own insecurities and how much of my life I spend trying to please other people. But I also learned that’s not always a weakness.

Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
It’s a combination of both. Sometimes I just draft and let myself go until I run out of steam. But other times, if I feel stuck, I go back and edit what I’ve written the last few days before, and that can help me get back into the characters’ heads and find my way out of my sticking point.

What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
I love a good pizza. Especially NY style pizza. There is nothing like a fresh NY slice in between Broadway shows.

Describe your writing space/office!
It’s full of things that make me happy and comfortable. I painted one wall purple when I moved in because the color inspires me. My desk is full of trinkets I’ve collected like Funko pops and Taylor Swift merch.

Who is an author you admire?
As a Canadian, I was raised on Margaret Atwood. Her writing style and mine are nothing alike, but I drink her books like water, and I admire her way with words. She’s also willing to speak up against injustices and was very kind when I got to meet her years ago.

Is there a book that changed your life?
Honestly, right now it’s Dante’s Inferno. Reading that book inspired NOT TODAY, SATAN, and it wouldn’t be on shelves soon if my grade 9 English teacher hadn’t given me her copy when I told her the one chapter we were supposed to read for class wasn’t enough.

Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published). Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
I was actually at the doctor’s office, which is probably the least glamorous place you can be when an email like that comes in. I had the editor on my VIP list, which meant the email popped right up on my phone as I waited in the little back room. Then my doctor walked in. I remember trying to talk to her while also spinning from reading that Entangled had offered on my book. I honestly have no idea what that appointment was about. All I remember is how I couldn’t scream or even go tell my husband who was waiting at a nearby coffee shop until after the appointment. Then I went home and cried a lot of happy tears.

What’s your favorite genre to read?
Horror or Fantasy, for sure. YA or adult, I can’t resist a good romance or a scare or both.

What’s your favorite movie?
I’m a musical fan, and Wicked is my favorite musical of all time. I’ve seen it on stage 48 times. So it comes as no surprise the Wicked movie has quickly become my favorite movie. I am counting down to part two.

What is your favorite season?
I am a fall girlie through and through. Give me flannel and hoodies and crisp breezes and day.

How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
My husband and I both have birthdays in March, so we like to do something together. One of our favorite ways to celebrate in the past has been to go to NYC and watch a bunch of Broadway shows. We met doing musicals in high school, so we both love the theater.

What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
I absolutely adore Heartstopper. It’s such a well-written show with characters you can’t help but love. I can’t wait for the movie.

What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
I’m Ukrainian, so I love a good Ukrainian meal. Give me borscht, pierogies, cabbage rolls and sour cream and I’m in heaven.

What do you do when you have free time?
I love to bake and play video games. I’m a cozy gamer. The Sims, Animal Crossing, Cozy Grove and Tiny bookshop are some of my current plays. Though my husband and I are really caught up in Split Fiction right now. It’s a writer’s dream game.

What can readers expect from you next?
I’m currently working on the sequel to NOT TODAY, SATAN, and then I hope to keep putting out books that are fun and funny but also tug at the heart strings.

NOT TODAY, SATAN by Samantha Joyce

I’m destined to rule the damned…not fall for one.

Think your life is hell?

Try being the Prince of Darkness’s only daughter—a seventeen-year-old born and raised in Hell, destined to inherit the throne, and constantly enduring the (literal) eternal moans and screams of souls who had it coming.

The only thing worse than ruling the Underworld is working here. Day after day, it’s me, a bunch of demons who are too intimidated by my dad to befriend me, and an endless lineup of sinners. Until Nathan Reynolds shows up, with a smile that could turn brimstone to butterflies, claiming he’s innocent.

I don’t question the system; it’s never wrong. But Nate’s pleading eyes have me doubting everything I’ve ever known.

So, I’m going to do the one thing I’m not supposed to do: I’m going to help him break out. Even if it means showing Nate exactly who I am. Metaphorical horns and all.

Because if we don’t make it out of here?

We’re not just damned. We’re doomed.

About Samantha Joyce

Samantha Joyce

Samantha became an author because she much preferred writing about other people instead of herself. Then she was told she needed to write an author bio for her books and website, and her plan was thwarted. She’s the author of two adult romance books: Flirting with Fame and Dealing in Deception. She lives in Toronto, Ontario Canada, and when she is not writing, she’s baking pretty cakes or beading jewelry or sitting in the audience at many Broadway musicals. Samantha’s a hopeless romantic who loves writing about love. Her favorite thing in the world is making people laugh, so if you chuckle at least once while reading her books, this bio writing thing was worth it.
