Sangu Mandanna | Conversations in Character with Sera Swan

July 17, 2025

Book Title: A WITCH’S GUIDE MAGICAL INNKEEPING
Character Name: Sera Swan

Thanks for agreeing to this interview, Sera.

You didn’t give me much of a choice.

Right. Shall we just jump right in then? What was it like being the most powerful witch of your generation?

Well, for a start, I wasn’t. I mean, I was, but only in Britain. The rest of the world exists too. Have you noticed the Guild always seems to forget that? They’d like to pretend we have the best and brightest, but I have no doubt there are other witches in other places who are just as powerful as I was. Sorry, what was the question again? Oh, right. What was it like? I’m not sure how to answer that, to be honest. Having all that magical power was incredible. It was everything to me. Having it came with challenges, though. When you have so much magic, that’s all people see. They don’t see you.

And what are you up to these days?

Did Albert Grey tell you to ask me that? I’m not up to anything. I’m definitely not trying to get my magic back.

Er, okay. I meant more like what’s your life like now? You don’t have much magic anymore. You run an inn. What about romance? Do you have anyone special in your life?

No. (Long pause.) My great-aunt Jasmine thinks I have feelings for Luke, but I don’t. Have you met Luke? He’s a human glacier. I mean, yes, he looks like that and he’s really clever and he’s so lovely with his little sister, but still. Human. Glacier.

What’s your favourite spell to cast?

Right now? Probably the one that gets rid of a headache. Not exactly impressive, is it? Back then, though? I suppose my favorite spell was the one that brought my great-aunt back to life.

I don’t think we’re supposed to talk about that. Um, what’s your favorite TV show?

(Silence.)

I know. I panicked. I did want to ask about the inn, though. There have been rumors floating around the Guild for years that you’ve enchanted it.

Yes, that’s true.

Can you tell me more about that?

Can I? Yes. Do I want to? No, not really.

What do you think is your greatest personal failing?

Someone told me recently that I have no talent for diplomacy. (Pause.) I can see from your expression that you agree.

What keeps you awake at night?

I live with an undead rooster that can’t tell the time. What do you think keeps me awake at night?

What’s the most pressing problem you have at the moment? (Pause.) You’re going to say it’s this interview, aren’t you?

I’ll see you out.

A WITCH’S GUIDE TO MAGICAL INNKEEPING by Sangu Mandanna

Bringing together a grounded fantasy and an engaging romance and setting it at an inn is exactly the kind of cozy, charming read you’d expect it to be. This feel-good, magical story with dabbles of alchemy, wit and fully realized magic is the kind of book to brighten even the most curmudgeonly reader.

An enchanting novel about a witch who has a second chance to get her magical powers—and her life—back on track, from the national bestselling author of The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches.

Sera Swan was once one of the most powerful witches in Britain. Then she resurrected her great-aunt Jasmine from the (very recently) dead, lost most of her magic, befriended a semi-villainous talking fox, and was exiled from her magical Guild. Now she (slightly reluctantly and just a bit grumpily) helps Aunt Jasmine run an inn in Lancashire, where she deals with her quirky guests’ shenanigans, tries to keep the talking fox in check, and longs for the magical future she lost.

When she learns about an old spellbook that holds the secret to restoring her power, she turns to Luke Larsen, a gorgeous historian who might just be able to help her unlock the book’s mysteries. Luke, who has his own reasons for staying at the inn, never planned on getting involved in the madcap goings-on around him and definitely had no intention of letting certain grumpy innkeepers past his icy walls, so no one is more surprised than he is when he not only agrees to help, but also finds himself thawing.

Running an inn, reclaiming lost magic, and staying one step ahead of the watchful Guild is a lot for anyone, but Sera is about to discover that she doesn’t have to do it alone… and that the weird, wonderful family she’s made might be the best magic of all.
