Sofie Ryan | Who Murdered a Ghost Hunter?

July 3, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release?

SCAREDY CAT

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Sarah Grayson owns a re-purpose store. Her grandmother’s friends run a detective agency, Charlotte’s Angels, out of her sunporch and Sarah keeps getting pulled into their investigations. After back-to-back cases she’s heading off to spend a quiet Sunday afternoon on a house tour with her friend Michelle. Sarah’s eager to get inside some of the most beautiful old houses in town. She’s thinking about vintage chairs and antique sideboards. She isn’t expecting to find a dead body at Gladstone House, the second stop on the tour. Suddenly the Angels have a case and Sarah finds herself trying to figure out who murdered a ghost hunter and whether or not the stories about Gladstone House being haunted might actually be true!

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

This book is part of a series. They’re all set in North Harbor, Maine.

4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

I’m not sure. Dead bodies seem to keep turning up around her!

5–What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Stubborn. Funny. Perceptive.

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

I was surprised that several people I know believe in the possibility that ghosts exist.

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I’m a write through until the end person. Then I go back and edit. Otherwise I’d never get beyond the first chapter.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Pizza.

9–Describe your writing space/office!

It’s a small space in the basement. (Our house isn’t very big.) My favorite thing in my office is the table my husband made for me because I couldn’t find one that was the size I wanted. I use it more than I use my desk.

10–Who is an author you admire?

I can’t pick just one. Lawrence Block, Dennis Lehane, Margaret Maron, Becky Chambers, and Kurt Vonnegut Jr are just a few of my favorites.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

I’d have to say The Poky Little Puppy. It was the first book I read by myself.

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

I know this is a very cliched answer, but I thought it was someone playing a trick on me. I used to work with a bunch of guys who were big into practical jokes.

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

I like everything. At the moment I’m reading a lot of historical mysteries.

14–What’s your favorite movie?

The Princess Bride. I’d like to take sword-fighting lessons, but I am very clumsy and uncoordinated. I’d probably put someone’s eye out with a sword!

15–What is your favorite season?

Fall. We do a lot of hiking and fall weather is perfect for that.

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

As long as there’s cake, I’m happy. Or cupcakes. I can be flexible.

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I recently watched the 2020 documentary The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart. I knew they were talented, but I had no idea how under-rated all three of them were.

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

My mother was British, so I have a soft spot for good fish and chips or shepherds pie.

19–What do you do when you have free time?

We hike a lot. I’ve been getting back into papermaking. And I love prowling around thrift stores and flea markets.

20–What can readers expect from you next?

The next book in the Magical Cats mysteries, Paws to Remember, which I write as Sofe Kelly, will be out this fall.

Scaredy Cat

Secondhand store owner Sarah Grayson and her affectionate rescue cat, Elvis, will scare up a few leads to find a killer in the newest installment of this captivating New York Times bestselling series.

After a long, cold, and snowy winter, it seems as though spring may be arriving early in Maine. Sarah Grayson is busy at her store, Second Chance, and she’s looking forward to an afternoon break from the hustle and bustle, tagging along to the North Harbor Spring House Tour with her friend Detective Michelle Andrews.

But it turns out one of the houses has a haunted history, and when a ghost hunter is found dead on the premises, Sarah knows the best way to uncover the killer/to solve the mystery is by investigating the not-so-dearly departed. With help from Elvis and Charlotte’s Angels, the crew of senior citizen private detectives who work out of the store, she’ll close the case on this creepy crime.
