Sylvie Kurtz | Conversations in Character with Max

Book Title: RESCUE YOU, Love in Brighton Village Book 5
Character Name: Max

How would you describe your family or your childhood?
It wasn’t the greatest. Some people didn’t treat me good. I ended up in an awful place Lark calls a shelter. So loud and so many bad smells. Twice. Lark saved me.

What was your greatest talent?
Knowing where I belong.

Significant other?
Well, I don’t know what that means, but even though Lark is great, Caleb is my person. He’s the one I’ve been looking for all my life. And now that I’ve found him, I won’t let him go.

Biggest challenge in relationships?
It took him forever to see he needed me.

Where do you live?
Right now? In the tiny home by the lake. I love it there. I can run around all I want. At night, Caleb makes a fire, and we just sit there vegging. He feeds me bacon. That’s the life.

Do you have any enemies?
Me? Of course not! Everybody loves me. Well, maybe not the guy I bit because he wasn’t my guy. But everybody else.

How do you feel about the place where you are now?
I love being wherever my guy is—the store, the tiny house, Lark’s place. I’m easy to please.

Do you have children, pets, both, or neither?
I have my guy and Lark and that’s enough for me.

What do you do for a living?
I take care of Caleb, especially when he looks like he’s going to have an anxiety attack. Then I press myself against him and let him know he’s safe. I also wake him up from nightmares. The guy trashes around and almost knocked me right off the bed last week.

Greatest disappointment?
That it took so long to find my guy.

Greatest source of joy?
Being with my people.

What do you do to entertain yourself or have fun?
I love to chase balls, learn new tricks, lie by the fire, just be wherever Caleb is. He’s my guy.

What is your greatest personal failing, in your view?
I have no idea what that means. I’m a great guy.

What keeps you awake at night?
Caleb’s nightmares. They make me worry about him. But they don’t happen as often anymore.

What is the most pressing problem you have at the moment?
Finding some bacon. I’m really hungry.

Is there something that you need or want that you don’t have? For yourself or for someone important to you?
I’ve got everything I want—Caleb and Lark. He’s been spending a lot of time with Lark lately. No offense, there’s nothing wrong with playing with other dogs at the center. But I like to keep my people to myself. And my best time is home with both.

RESCUE YOU by Sylvie Kurtz

Love in Brighton Village #5

Second chances, friendship, betrayal…and dogs that can rescue hearts.

Lark Eamon has been ridiculed and ostracized for her ability to hear thoughts…specifically the thoughts of dogs. So, over the hears, she’s learned to hide her gift. Instead, she’s built a solid reputation as a dog trainer and owner of a canine center dedicated to dogs’ happiness.

Until one autumn day, when Max the Terrible, a terrier who’s used up all his chances, lands on her doorstep. To make matters worse, she learns her ex-best friend has returned home and wants to make up. Hobbled by PTSD anxiety, her brother’s best friend, on whom she’s had a crush forever, resists her offer of a service dog. And her landlord has just announced he won’t renew her lease.

Now Lark has less than a month to find a new place for her center, run the annual dog Adopt-a-Thon at the Pumpkin Festival…and find Max a new home.

As Lark juggles her obligations, she struggles with her inability to rescue everything and everyone. But when everything she’s built finally falls apart, she discovers that telling the truth opens her life to new relationships in ways she’d never imagined.
