Tabetha Waite Interview – Mystery, Romance, and a Irresistible Irish Hero

May 18, 2022

How do Conor Flannigan and Miss Delilah Rollins meet in VANQUISHED? And how would you describe their dynamic?

They quite literally run into each other! Delilah’s father is a celebrated horse breeder, and while searching Tattersall’s Auction House for their wayward groom who is supposed to caring for their prized stud, Mr. Flannigan comes striding around the corner at the wrong time, so they don’t get off to a very good start!

What made you decide to write an Irish hero?

That was based on the Driven Series by K Bromberg. In her novels, the hero, Colton Donovan, was adopted. He finds out later that he is of Irish descent. I asked if I could write a story based on his ancestor and Kristy loved the idea! This is the first story in the Shared World that has a historical twist.

What makes a good romantic hero?

I love a good brood! And definitely some mystery. I’ve always been a sucker for the tall, dark, and handsome trope with a bit of a bad boy rake, who falls hard for the heroine, but does his best to deny his emotions.

Some of my favorite historical romances have a mix of romance and mystery. Is that true of VANQUISHED or any of your other books?

Most definitely! My author tagline is that “I write romance with adventure and heart.” I like to throw in a twist somewhere to keep the reader expecting the unexpected. My backlist includes a historical paranormal and a Jack the Ripper retelling. The macabre parts of history are fascinating to me, probably because I started out reading the old Gothic romances. If there is a secret passageway, I’m hooked!

How much research, if any, goes into one of your historical romances? Are you a history buff? What’s your favorite time period?

My favorite time period is the Georgian era, which included the Regency, but I also love the Victorian era. I normally research as I go along. I’m a total pantser when it comes to writing. My characters take the lead and tell me their story. I just say I’m the one taking dictation! However, I do try to be as accurate as possible. I have found some very interesting tidbits in my research, and I love stumbling across something different!

I admit that I’m a sucker for good dialogue in a romance. Witty repartee establishes a couple’s chemistry for me and sells the story. What is your favorite part of writing a romance – dialogue, history, action, description, or something else?

I do like writing dialogue and I always try to add something witty. I love to laugh and joke around, so I hope that part of my personality shows through in my books. But honestly, the whole process appeals to me. It has since I was little. There isn’t a part of writing that I don’t enjoy, unless it’s when I feel “stuck” and the words just won’t appear.

If you could only recommend one of your books to readers unfamiliar with your work, which book would you recommend? And why?

I would have to say, WHY THE EARL IS AFTER THE GIRL. It was the first book I ever got published and will always be special to me. I adore them all, of course, as each character represents a new romance and all the feels that go along with it, but there is a roller skating scene in this one, which was one of my favorite activities growing up.

A few authors I’ve interviewed in the past have told me that the kind of books they enjoy reading are different from the types of books they enjoy writing. What do you like to read? Favorite authors or titles?

I guess I’m in the minority, as I like to write what I read. I have several favorite historical authors including Lisa Kleypas, Sabrina Jeffries, Candace Camp, and MANY others. In fantasy, I highly recommend Sarah J. Maas and for modern paranormal, I love JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood. The only thing I haven’t branched into writing is erotic, other than a short story, or LGBTQ+, but I enjoy reading them, as well as a good inspirational romance. Honestly, as long as there is a love story  somewhere, there is a good chance I’ll grab it!

What are you currently working on?

Right now I’m working on my Sensual Scandals series. I just finished the first full length story, following a Christmas prequel, and now I’m already working on the next! It is about four half-sisters who wish to be independent women in society. But as life often teaches us, sometimes things don’t always work out as planned!

VANQUISHED by Tabetha Waite

The Driven World

Vanquished

Conor Flannigan was the most sensual man that Miss Delilah Rollins had ever met. He exuded sexuality from every part of his being and at the moment, that raw aura was focused on her. But she knew trouble when she saw it and the carriage racing enthusiast was just one turn away from being dangerous. She couldn’t allow her heart to become involved with a man who took such risks.

And yet…

There was something compelling about that Irish brogue, mixed with his hypnotizing green eyes, that beckoned her to give herself over to him. As the daughter of a baron where reputation is key, she can’t allow the temptation that Conor offers to consume her. However, some things are just too powerful to ignore and the more Delilah is around him, sparks fly. As their relationship progresses, she learns there are secrets to Conor’s past that he hides from view. Does she even dare to try and set him free from his demons? Or will she find herself vanquished by his virile power of seduction?
