Terri Reed | A DEA Agent and a US Marshal Go Undercover as Santa and Mrs. Claus

December 13, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release?

UNDEROVER CHRISTMAS ESCAPE

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Undercover as Santa and Mrs. Claus, DEA agent Duncan O’Brien and deputy US marshal Sera Morales must expose money laundering and bring down a drug cartel. But armed thieves steal the incriminating evidence forcing Duncan and Sera to protect long-lost family members before this Christmas becomes their last.

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

My US Marshal series is set mostly in Texas so I wanted to set the book in Dallas. I took inspiration from the Christmas movie DIE HARD. I wanted the opening of Undercover Christmas Escape to be in a high rise and Dallas had several to choose from.

4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Yes, I think Sera Morales would be interesting to spend time with. She’s bold, brash and the exact opposite of me. LOL

5–What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Sera is bold, brash and determined. Duncan is courageous, by-the-book, and protective.

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

I learned a great deal about the US Marshals while writing this and the previous two books. The job of a US Marshal is challenging and diverse. From Witness protection and judicial protection to fugitive retrieval and assisting other agencies, the deputies are pushed to the limits. It takes a big commitment, dedication to a high set of standards and integrity to be a deputy marshal.

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I edit as I go. I dictate my first draft of each chapter, edit it then send to my critique partner, do her edits and then put it in a master file. When done with the book, I read through again before sending to my editor.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Donuts! I love French crueler.

9–Describe your writing space/office!

I have a dedicated office behind the kitchen. Most days it looks like a paper bomb went off. When I’m writing, I don’t bother being organized. As soon as I turn in a book, I clean the clutter so I can start the next project.

10–Who is an author you admire?

Jane Porter. We’ve known each other since we were both unpublished hopefuls. I’m proud of all that Jane has accomplished and admire her so much.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

The book that made me want to write romance is A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux. I fell in love with the romance genre and was so thankful when Harlequin opened their Christian fiction romance lines where I could combine my faith with my love of romance and adventure.

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

I was driving my children to school and my brand-new cellphone rang. This was way before the laws of not talking while driving! I asked if I could call the editor back when I got home. I remember squealing and my kids being concerned. They had no idea how big a deal it was to have received that call.

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

I love historical romance and thrillers. And of course, romantic suspense.

14–What’s your favorite movie?

All-time favorite movie is A Sound of Music. A romance, adventure and inspiration all rolled into one musical!

15–What is your favorite season?

Christmas time. Everyone seems just a bit happier even if they are a bit busier and manic.

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

Usually with hubby and friends out to dinner at my favorite restaurant.

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

Mr. Iglesias on Netflix. It’s from 2019 but I only recently found it. It’s such a fun sitcom.

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Italian food. Comfort and goodness all in one.

19–What do you do when you have free time?

play with my dog. She and I do agility training every week and spend hours working on our tricks.

20–What can readers expect from you next?

In June the last book in my US Marshal’s series releases. Shielding the Innocent Target is about a woman who witnesses a murder, now she and her son are in danger and it’s up to a deputy US marshal to bring them safely into the witness protection program, but a relentless assassin is on their tail and will stop at nothing until the witness and her son are eliminated.
