Brooklyn Ann writes horror and a few different subgenres of romance. She recently experienced a tragedy when strong winds knocked down a tree and it fell onto the home she shared with her longtime partner. He was killed while in bed. It’s what everybody fears – a sudden loss that you’re powerless to prevent.
Over the years, through social media (much of the time spent watching horror films in a Facebook film group – think Sci Mystery Science Theater 3000), I’ve gotten to know Brooklyn and by extension – through pictures and stories – her partner Kent. As a romance fan, I think there’s a certain level of curiosity about the type of man a writer of romance books is with. Is he anything like the heroes in their books? Is he anything like the often-idealized fictional heroes? In this instance, the answer would be “yes”. In fact, Kent and their love story inspired Brooklyn to put a version of him in one of her books – WITH VENGEANCE. Kent was a super sweet guy who helped at author conventions and other author events. He was a strong and steady support and a benevolent presence wherever he was. Devoted cat dad, musician, caring stepdad, and loving partner.
In addition to the loss of Kent as a positive force and loving presence, the damage caused by the tree has impacted just about every aspect of Brooklyn and her son’s lives and created a huge financial burden. One of Brooklyn’s friends immediately created a Go Fund Me and friends, family, fellow authors, and strangers have all been sharing and contributing.
In addition to the Go Fund Me, people have been supporting Brooklyn by buying her books. As somebody who is both a friend and a fan of her books, I can wholeheartedly recommend them. Her paranormal historical series (one of my favorite romance subgenres) has gothic delights, strong heroines, and intense supernatural heroes. Her contemporary Hearts of Metal romance series is perhaps my favorite. The characters are realistically flawed, but their stories draw you in and you root for them. Her fantasy Brides of Prophecy series has a little bit of everything – wizards, witches, vampires, and people just trying to survive their circumstances. My other favorite series written by Brooklyn is her horror romance series. Set in the 1980s and inspired by classic horror films and the myth of the “final girl”, these stories have appeal for fans of cheesy 80s horror films as well as romance readers. They have a little bit of “new adult” angst, the classic hero’s quest, and slapstick mixed in with the thrills and romance.
