Book Title: UNPREDICTABLE MAGIC
Character Name: Angelina Everhart-Trueblood, aka Angie, aka Angie Baby, aka Ange

How would you describe your family or your childhood?
Oh, y’all. I had a magical childhood. I’m witch. Haha. Yack it up. I’m also the godchild of the Dark Queen of the Vampires, A “Princess by Decree” in her royal court, I had an actual angel looking out for me, and I’m a witch on both sides of my family, a double gened witch. (Witch power is passed down on the X genes, and I got mine from Mama and Daddy both.) I lived through Jane Yellowrock ascending to the Dark Throne, which was a bloody and violent horror, survived the vamp war, and was engaged at age eight to the Vampire Emperor of Europe. Not that he agreed to that but, hey, he was my first crush and I was a demanding little snot. Because of all that, I got backstory out the wazzoo. I grew up in the royal court, being taught royal protocol by the staff of vampires, magic by the Everhart-Trueblood witch clan, and how to fight by vamps, supernats, and paranormal creatures. That’s why I was a little snotty brat – I grew up believing people loved me for myself. In reality, I was a protected, guarded child of pomp and circumstance, in danger from the queen’s vampire enemies, and was looked upon with desire and fear by other witches because of what I might one day become. And then, well, everything changed when I was eight or nine. Hayyel, my angel, went back to heaven and I lost most of my magic. It was silently devastating. Silently, because I never told my parents what it was like, being stripped of all that power, all that magic. And after that I was lonely. Just so lonely, except for EJ, my little brother. He shared most of that terrible time with me. Cassie was too little, and the age gap between my sister and me meant we were not as close as some might have thought. I’m not saying that I had no friends, but there was no one close until I met Mud – and she was a plant woman. She grew actual leaves when she got pissed off. She was older, and she was an outsider too. She was my first real friend. Speaking of which, I need to call Mud, drive over to Knoxville, and take her to dinner. Girls’ night out.

What was your greatest talent?
Magic. Even without heaven’s magic, I’m still the most powerful witch most people have ever heard of, and that’s not false pride, it’s fact. When I discovered battle magic … Well, I can be unstoppable. If my battle magic works. If I can locate that power before I’m dead. It’s … Unpredictable Magic.

Significant other?
I am determinedly single. Don’t get me started on my ex. That bloodsucker wooed me and won me when I was in college and, when I didn’t help his career move up the ladder the way he expected it to, did his best to destroy my life. He’s the biggest cheater of all cheaters, aka Asshat. He deserves worse than that, trust me, but royal protocol means I can’t call him worse in public media.

Biggest challenge in relationships?
I’m the queen’s godchild. I’ve had so many people try to get to her through me. Including Asshat. I never know when someone wants to be with me for me or to get to meet her. Or even to hurt her. I pretty much quit dating after Asshat. He convinced me I had bad taste in men and that men couldn’t be trusted. I’m telling you, he’s an Asshat.

Where do you live?
Chattanooga Tennessee. I love it. Hiking, rafting, kayaking, and the best dance bars in the country. Oh. Best food in the world, though don’t tell my vampire grampa. He thinks his BBQ is the best, but he’s in Asheville, North Carolina, which is an awful drive, so I don’t have to tell him, right? Despite the fact that neither EJ nor I want to be in the family coven, Chat-town is close enough to Asheville for us to visit. Family is important to us.

Do you have any enemies?
The list is as long as my right arm. There’s a $1,000,000 bounty on my head. You can blame Asshat for that one too.

How do you feel about the place where you are now? Is there something you are particularly attached to, or particularly repelled by, in this place?
It’s a cool city. The Appalachian Mountains are the best place on Earth. Though I have to admit that the infestation by werewolves when I was a kid was a problem. Don’t get me started on my cousin Shiloh, who is a witch by genetics, a vamp by forced transition, and also has werewolf prions in her bloodstream. We call her Cousin Wacko for good reason.

Do you have children, pets, both, or neither?
I rescued a Bassett Hound which promptly fell in love with EJ and stays in his apartment, and I have two cats. No, witches do not have familiars. No, Aurorae and Borealis are not familiars. Not. I refuse to be a rom-com vid-witch.

What do you do for a living?
Everhart Investigations is one of the best niche paranormal investigation companies in the country. I’m the CEO, EJ is the COO and CFO, and Walter is security. Walter is a vampire the queen sicced on us to keep us safe. Talk about a stick in the mud.

Greatest disappointment?
I never won the lottery. I never played it either, but come on. It would solve so many problems, right? Ah, well.

Greatest source of joy?
I’m not sure that joy applies to me. I’m content, peaceful, The Firm’s business is flourishing, and I have my magic to work on. None of that is particularly joyful, but it is a good life.

What do you do to entertain yourself or have fun?
I do yoga on the porch in all types of weather and I like outdoor sports, but I adore dancing. Kegs and Boots is my favorite dance bar and the house band is steller! They can play everything, and the lead singer is always on key – except when he isn’t. You’ll have to read the book to find out why that matters.

What is your greatest personal failing, in your view?
Lack of patience, a bad temper, and the inability to hone my battle magic into something predictable and useful. Maybe those are combined?

What keeps you awake at night?
Knowing that I once had major magic, assured, powerful, predictable magic. I once could handle raw magic, pulling it through my body and shaping it with intent and will. And now I don’t. Sometimes at night I dream, remembering the way power felt flowing through me. And then I wake up, and it’s gone. A part of me ripped away. I probably need therapy, but I carry too many of the queen’s secrets, so that isn’t happening.

What is the most pressing problem you have at the moment?
Staying alive. The queen did her best to keep me safe, but that $1,000,000 bounty is always hanging over my head.

Is there something that you need or want that you don’t have? For yourself or for someone important to you?
I want to keep my family safe and my enemies true-dead. Fingers crossed.

Why don’t you have it? What is in the way?
Most of the time I have no idea who my enemies are. Someone could walk in The Firm’s door as a prospective client and kill me on sight, before I could react. The demon war taught us that all friends can become enemies. I want to be safe. I want my magic to work. Maybe someday. Thanks for reading. Check out Unpredictable Magic. Arrivederci, y’all. That’s Italian. You’ll discover why that matters soon…

Witches Angelina and Evan Everhart-Trueblood take a case that spirals out of control until the whole city is at risk in this exciting new novel from New York Times bestselling author Faith Hunter.

Angelina Everhart-Trueblood and her brother Evan run Everhart Investigations Inc., a PI firm in Chattanooga that solves paranormal crimes committed by supernatural beings. When their new client wants help finding her friend who supposedly disappeared during a reception at Angie’s aunt Jane’s winter residence, things get . . . complicated.

The client is not who she appears to be, and demons strike the city for the first time since the Demon War. On top of that, evidence is pointing toward the involvement of an overly ambitious vampire—who just happens to be Angie’s ex-husband.

As Angie and Evan team up with the CPD, they will have to dig deep into their magical reserves—and rely on some friends in high places—to rid Chattanooga of the danger creeping into their city.
