What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
When a dead body and a meth ring turn up in a small town of Colorado, can a former DEA agent protect the intriguing travel writer intent upon investigating his town before she’s the next casualty?
How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
I grew up in Durango, Colorado. I knew I wanted to set a story in Southwest Colorado. Even though Silverberg is fictional, there are many real-life influences on the setting. It was so much fun to write about an area that is so close to my heart.
Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?
I would! But she’s a lot braver and more adventurous than I am. I want to be more like her.
What are three words that describe your hero?
Protective, loyal, capable
What’s something you learned while writing this book?
I learned the DEA does so much more than we can ever imagine to protect our citizens. It’s not always the “up front” branch of law enforcement we see, but I am grateful for their tireless work.
Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
I light-edit as I draft, but try not to get too bogged down in details. I do make sure the “big picture” plot issues work so I can keep moving forward. Once I get the story in decent shape, I dial in the grammar and pacing and flow and all the little details.
What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
Fettuccini alfredo, chocolate, charcuterie
Describe your writing space/office!
When I am drafting a story, I have my laptop on my lap, and I create on the couch. I always have two drinks next to me, depending on the time of day. (Morning: coffee and water; afternoon: sparkling water and regular water; evening: hot tea and water). When I edit, I work on two screens at the desk in my bedroom with a notebook and calendar open for tracking story details. I’ve realized they are two very different processes that require different setups for my brain to best function.
Who is an author you admire?
Lynn H. Blackburn—her ability to weave romance and suspense together is my favorite!
Is there a book that changed your life?
Aside from the obvious (the Bible), I would say Janette Oke’s LOVE COMES SOFTLY. A teacher handed me that book in middle school and that started my love of Christian Fiction. In my early Christian Fiction years, I read a lot of Lori Wick stories and Pretense was a favorite. Of course, Dee Henderson’s O’Malley stories started my love of romantic suspense.
Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published). Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
I was walking into a physical therapy appointment for my son and my agent, Lynette called. I’ll never forget what she said: “I have some news. Kregel wants to offer you a deal for your three-book series. It was the most exciting, pinch-me moment of this journey, and such a wonderful surprise!
What’s your favorite genre to read?
romantic suspense or romance
What’s your favorite movie?
I’ll always love You’ve Got Mail. Even though the technology has changed, the love story is my favorite.
What is your favorite season?
Summer! Long days, more adventures outside
How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
I love quality time with my loved ones, usually a good meal is involved.
What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
Well, I am a cohost of the LitLadies Podcast (slightly biased), so I get the front row seat to interviewing authors. It’s one of my favorite parts of the writing journey—I learn so much and have made so many wonderful connections.
What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
Italian
What do you do when you have free time?
I love to read! I also love time outside running, walking, hiking, or at the lake.
