Amy K. Green | Harmless office worker Gwen Tanner is the vanished daughter of a serial killer

November 19, 2025

What is the title of your latest release?
HAVEN’T KILLED IN YEARS

What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
No one is supposed to know harmless office worker Gwen Tanner is the vanished daughter of serial killer Abel Haggerty, but a new name and a low profile aren’t going to cut it when an obsessive new killer starts targeting her.

How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
I’ve spent most of my life in New England and currently live on the outskirts of Boston. I love Boston as a setting because characters can experience full city lives in their day-to-day, but within a short drive, they can be somewhere completely different. Disposing of evidence under the watchful eye of fifty security cameras per square block around Fenway Park versus the uninhabited woods of New Hampshire allows for natural flexibility and variety as the story unfolds.

Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?
If I didn’t know her backstory, sure! But if I knew her secrets, I would prefer to just stalk her on social media (although I doubt she would ever post anything juicy).

What are three words that describe your protagonist?
Sarcastic, intuitive, withdrawn

What’s something you learned while writing this book?
I learned what it would take to dispose of a body in a kiln, but that isn’t knowledge that I expect to come in handy in the future.

Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
Both. I try not to get bogged down with going back and editing while working on the first full draft, but if I know I’ve changed something significant that affects previous chapters, I have to go back and address it asap. If I don’t, it will sit there in my brain reminding me that I’ve left a wake of hot nonsense behind me, which will slow down my productivity. Once I have a full first draft, then I try to step back and make more aggressive big-picture edits.

What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
I wouldn’t consider myself a foodie, because I have the culinary habits of someone in prison, but I’ve been eating vegan for nearly two years now and love to splurge when I come across a vegan bakery.

Describe your writing space/office!
I’m fortunate enough to have a dedicated office in my house and for me, adding a dual monitor has been life changing, especially when editing. I did make the mistake of hanging a TV on the wall behind where I sit. It taunts me when I’m trying to be most productive. The good thing is, if I turn around to look at it, my computer monitor reflects on the TV screen to remind me I am making an irresponsible decision.

Who is an author you admire?
I don’t even know how to describe what I admire most about Lisa Jewell’s writing style. The best way I can describe it is, I find her writing to be beautifully to the point. I think she’s mastered that balance.

Is there a book that changed your life?
The Pelican Brief by John Grisham was the first book I read that made me feel like I was finally reading a “grown up” book. It inspired me to read many more John Grisham titles before my adolescent brain thought to branch out to other “grown up” books.

Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
It’s kind of all a blur. There were a lot of calls with my agent in a short period of time. I remember pacing around the house and dusting. When it was over, I remember everything being quiet and still. . .and my baseboards were very clean. I think it took me a few hours to really process it.

What’s your favorite genre to read?
Female-driven thrillers!

What’s your favorite movie?
Love and Basketball. It was my favorite movie in high school, and nothing has been able to topple it from its throne.

What is your favorite season?
Fall. It’s not even close.

How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
Nothing big. I usually treat myself to Taco Bell and grab a drink with friends.

What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
I loved Paradise on Hulu, and of course I loved the Hunting Wives on Netflix. I’m really into the podcast, The First Degree, right now.

What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
Mediterranean

What do you do when you have free time?
Fight with the inner demons that tell me to look at my phone and if I win, I do never-ending house projects, meet up with friends, read, watch sports, and occasionally play them. If they win, I look at Tik Tok for hours.

What can readers expect from you next?
I’m working on my next book with Berkley. I’d tell you more, but if experience has taught me anything, it’s that the published version will end up being much different than the current draft. But it’s safe to assume at least one person will be murdered when all is said and done.

HAVEN’T KILLED IN YEARS by Amy K. Green

No one is supposed to know harmless office worker Gwen Tanner is the vanished daughter of serial killer Abel Haggerty. But a low profile and a new name aren’t going to cut it when an obsessive new killer starts targeting her, in this lively and propulsive thriller with a standout voice.

Marin Haggerty, the daughter of a notorious serial killer, was only a child when they arrested her father. Ripped from her home and given a new identity, Marin disappeared.

Twenty years later, Gwen Tanner keeps everyone at a distance, preferring to satirize the world around her than participate in it. It’s for her safety—and theirs. But when someone starts sending body parts to her front door, the message is clear: I Know Who You Are.

To preserve her secrets, Gwen must hunt down the killer, a journey which immerses her in the twisted world of true crime fandom and makes her confront her past once and for all. Maybe she is capable of deep, human connections, but she’s not the only one keeping secrets. Will opening herself up to others help her find the killer, or remind her why it was necessary she hide her true self in the first place?

The apple never falls too far, after all.
