Anne Perry Interview – The New Daniel Pitt Mystery

April 11, 2022

For readers who may be new to your Daniel Pitt series, how would you describe Daniel?

I would describe Daniel as coming from a happy childhood, but with a father who succeeded to a degree that obliges Daniel to strive constantly to be not only professionally successful, but to live up to the same moral standards… and incidentally a mother who is brave and individual, which means that Daniel himself can be happy only with a brave and individual kind of woman.

What made you decide to have a barrister as your main character in this series?

I wanted him to detect, with urgency, high stakes to win or lose, but not to be another policeman, and I love courtroom scenes.  A barrister gives me the chance to have lots of them, quite legitimately.

How much research goes into your books? Are any of the characters in THREE DEBTS PAID inspired by actual people in history?

The amount of research varies from book to book. A lot of it is constant throughout the series. Most of the change comes from being a slightly different time. Different things are happening. No. Real people now, possibly.

The early 1900s is an interesting period to set a mystery series. Do you include any early crime detection techniques in your books?

There has to be some detection appropriate to the time, and I look it up as I need it.

Your recent book, A DARKER REALITY is a spy thriller set in the 1930s. I love that period, and especially mysteries set at that time. What made you decide to set a series in that period with a female spy?

I chose the 1930s because, regrettably we are living in very similar times.  There is an immense value to holding up a mirror and seeing what we are doing, how little we have learned, and see copies of the great, and the terrible all over again.  One could write a hundred books on what we have and have not learned.

If you could only choose one of your books to recommend to readers who may be unfamiliar with your work, which would you pick? And why?

Possibly THE FACE OF A STRANGER because it is the first of a series, and beings with an immediate and universal problem – Who am I?

A few other authors I’ve interviewed have said that the kinds of books they write are not the same kinds of books they read. What do you like to read? Favorite books? Favorite authors?

I read history books, and those necessary for research, but for pleasure I read mysteries.  I like to read about a complex detective, who grows and changes through the story. If he learns nothing I don’t want to know. But there are plenty who do change, learn inwardly and outwardly.

What are you currently working on?

I am working on the fifth Elena story, this time set in England, and involving acute treason, family problems, difficult choices.

THREE DEBTS PAID by Anne Perry

Daniel Pitt #5

Three Debts Paid

A killer is on the loose, targeting victims with a mysterious connection that young barrister Daniel Pitt must deduce before more bodies pile up, in this intricately woven mystery from New York Times bestselling author Anne Perry.

A serial killer is roaming the streets of London, and Daniel Pitt’s university chum Ian, now a member of the police, is leading the search. The murders happen on rainy nights, but Ian knows the victims must have something in common beyond the weather. He turns to Miriam fford Croft, Daniel’s good friend and now officially one of the first female pathologists in London, to tap her scientific know-how to find details he and Daniel have missed.

With Miriam involved in the murder investigation, Ian passes Daniel the case of Nicholas Wolford, their former university professor. Charged with assault after reacting violently to an accusation of plagiarism, Wolford, a proud, boastful man, is loath to admit he was in the wrong. But Daniel must defend him—whether he likes him or not.

As the murders continue with no clue as to who is committing them, Miriam, Daniel, and Ian find themselves questioning everything. Is the “Rainy-day Slasher,” as the newspapers have dubbed the killer, really just one person? Or have the investigators stumbled into a more complicated web of deceit? The answer may lie closer than anyone could have expected.
