1–What is the title of your latest release?
2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
In AN AFFAIR AT STONECLIFFE, a fast-paced story of romance and intrigue, Noelle, a young widow, must turn to her greatest enemy for help. Carlisle Thorne can protect her from danger, but can she protect her heart from him?
3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
All my Regencies are set in England. However, in this story, I added a bit of Paris and the Continent in the opening because her dead husband was an artist. In England, the gorgeous country estate where they spend much of their time is reasonably close to London so readers get to experience a little of the social whirl the city was for the ton.
4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?
Absolutely! She’s determined, brave, and loving—definitely the kind of person I’d want to have on my side.
5–What are three words that describe your hero?
Loyal, proud, strong
6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?
I learned how very much British law ignored women’s rights at this time. I knew everything a woman owned became her husband’s when they married. And I assumed that a man was probably the appointed guardian of a child’s estate when their father died, but in researching that issue, I discovered that before 1839 the mother had no legal rights regarding the custody of the child either. The male guardian, occasionally a virtual stranger such as is the case in An Affair at Stonecliffe, could take a woman’s children from her for any or no reason. Here’s a little gem from Blackstone (the authority in English law): ‘a mother, as such, is entitled to no power, but only to reverence and respect.’
7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
I may do a few edits as I’m writing, such as deciding to switch a conversation from one place to another, but in general I wait until I’m totally done.
8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
Chocolate
9–Describe your writing space/office!
It’s messy and full of books, with a lot of windows for some beautiful natural light and several comfortable spots for reading.
10–Who is an author you admire?
There are lots of authors I admire. Jayne Ann Krentz is the first name that comes to mind. I admire her because she’s written lots of books and has retained the high quality. Her books are well-written and witty, and they have mysteries as well as romance, which is my favorite kind of book. And she writes in several genres which can be a tricky thing to do.
11–Is there a book that changed your life?
I don’t know that they changed my life, but Georgette Heyer books made me love Regency Romance.
12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)
With my first book, I hadn’t heard anything from the publisher for a year, and in the meantime, I’d moved to a different state and had a different phone number. One day I came home from work for lunch (at the time I was a lawyer at a bank—a job I found pretty unexciting) and there was a letter that had been forwarded from my old address. I couldn’t believe it when I read that they wanted my book but couldn’t get hold of me by phone. So I called them immediately, and did my best to sound calm and collected while accepting the offer. After that I called my mom, and then I pretty much just ran around my apartment jumping and shouting. I still get excited to this day when my agent calls me to say the publisher wants my book, though now I call my husband and my daughter, and I walk around the house, saying, “Yes! Yes!” It never gets old.
13–What’s your favorite genre to read?
Almost everything I read must have a romance in it, but my favorite genre is probably mystery. Obviously, I love historical romance, and I like some fantasy and some contemporary paranormal, like Kim Harrison’s and Patricia Briggs’ books. What I read at any given time depends on my mood.
14–What’s your favorite movie?
Casablanca
15–What is your favorite season?
Spring. I love the flowers and the warmer weather, but it’s not yet blazing hot.
16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
With my husband and daughter, just doing something I enjoy
17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
I wouldn’t recommend it for everyone because it has a lot of cursing, but I really enjoyed Dead to Me on Netflix. It doesn’t have a ton of romance in it but it is explores a lot of different relationships and manages to be funny, sad, and insightful. It’s also suspenseful but not in a scary way and has sharp, witty dialogue. I can’t wait for the final season, but I’m also dreading it because I hate when shows I love end.
18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
Italian
19–What do you do when you have free time?
I read. And then I read some more. Sometimes I watch Netflix.
20–What can readers expect from you next?
I just finished the next book in the Stonecliffe series, which is tentatively titled A ROGUE AT STONECLIFFE.
