Fresh FIction Box Not To Miss
Samantha Downing | Other People Get Drama, Sometimes with Deadly Results
Author Guest / July 17, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release? A TWISTED LOVE STORY 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? Wes and Ivy have been in a tumultuous, on-and-off relationship for ten years. Other people often get pulled into their drama…sometimes with deadly results. Now a detective is looking into their past and they need to do something they’ve never been able to do: Stay together. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? Every story has a certain feel to it, and that’s how I decide where it will take place. I’m originally from California, and that is where it felt like this book needed to be. 4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life? In this case, there are two protagonists: Wes and Ivy. I would hang out with both…but probably not for long! 5–What are three words that describe your protagonist? Wes and Ivy are dramatic, impulsive, and irresistible (to each other!) 6–What’s something you learned while writing this book? This book is really a combination of genres; it has elements of both rom-coms and thrillers. It was interesting, and sometimes frustrating, to try and incorporate elements of both. 7–Do you…

Susan Furlong | A Psychological Net of Death and Secrets
Author Guest / July 17, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release? THE KILLER’S WIFE 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? A serial killer, a woman on the run, and an obsessive parole officer tangle in a psychological net of death and secrets. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? In college, I worked a summer in northwest Montana and got to know the area. When it came time to write a setting for The Killer’s Wife, I knew I needed a small, isolated town with a lot of places for a killer to hide. I thought of Eureka, Montana, located on the backside of Glacier Park, surrounded by the Kootenai Forest, and the last stop before crossing into Canada. It’s a perfect place for a serial killer to go off grid and wait for his next victim, so I made it the model for my fictional town of Joy, Montana. 4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life? I would definitely hang out with Kerry Grey, my main protagonist. She’s a woman who’s been delt a bad hand in life and spent time in prison but is trying to make a fresh start for…

Leslie Budewitz | A Lunar New Year Celebration and a Murder Mystery
Author Guest / July 17, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release? BETWEEN A WOK AND A DEAD PLACE: A Spice Shop mystery   2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? When Pepper Reece, owner of the Spice Shop in Seattle’s Pike Place Market, joins in a Lunar New Year celebration and a body is discovered in a long-closed residential hotel, she’s forced to investigate—before someone else’s fortunes take an unlucky change.   3–This is the latest entry in a series set in Seattle. Does it get harder or easier to write a series set in the same city? Why? I’ve loved Seattle since I was a college student there and writing about the city never gets old! Plus it’s an excuse to keep up with the city, since cities are always changing, and to make regular research trips. And by research, you know I mean eat!   4–Last year we asked if you would hang out with your protagonist in real life. This year we’ll ask which of your secondary characters in Pepper’s life would you like to hang out with the most? That’s easy! Sandra Piniella, the Spice Shop’s assistant manager, because she’s closely based on a real-life friend of mine,…

1–What is the title of your latest release? ANGER BANG   2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?  Thea is at her sister’s over-the-top reality TV wedding and up until now when her sister nonchalantly mentioned that she never even wanted Thea at the wedding—the producers insisted—ouch doesn’t fully express how much it hurts. So for the first time Thea don’t think. She just does. And as a shy paleontologist who plans everything, she probably should have taken a moment. Instead, she asks the best man, who her sister absolutely loathes and who can’t stand her right back, if he’s up for a little naked revenge. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?  I came across a place called Coulter’s Hell. Audrey Wick | Title Challenge: SEEING US
Author Guest / July 14, 2023

Hi all! I’m Audrey Wick, author of SEEING US, a sweet love story between a patient looking for new glasses and the town’s optometrist. Today, I’m taking the Fresh Fiction title challenge. This is a spin on an acrostic poem where the first letter of a book’s title is used to describe it. Read along with me . . .   S is for Sight. My characters need to start seeing more clearly. E is for Experience. Danica Lara, the heroine, has made some decisions in her past that are complicating her present. E is for Expertise. Dr. Grady Urban, the hero, is the hunky new optometrist in town. I is for Interest. Lots of women are taking note of this handsome single guy. N is for Newness. Fresh experiences help this couple grow close. G is for Gratitude. Sweet encounters leave Danica and Grady feeling thankful.   U is for Unity. An opportunity for volunteer work culminates in a special event. S is for Satisfaction. A happily-ever-after is guaranteed here!   Now, here’s more about the book: Danica Lara hasn’t been seeing clearly. Blinded by the lure of profit in a partnership with her best friend’s ex, she’s also…

Elizabeth Rose | Conversations in Character | LOVE LETTERS FOR LADY LARK
Author Guest / July 14, 2023

Book Title: LOVE LETTERS FOR LADY LARK Character Name: Lady Lark MacKeefe   How would you describe your family or your childhood? My mother was English and my father, Scottish. I grew up in Scotland with my father’s clan, the MacKeefes. The MacKeefes have two chieftains: my father and my grandfather. They take turns ruling over our Highland camp and Hermitage Castle on the border. I have an older half-brother, Renard, and two younger siblings, Heather, and Hawke. My father, Storm MacKeefe is a man who is loved and feared at the same time. I happened to be the black sheep of my family.   What was your greatest talent? Making my father angry?   Significant other? I married Dustin Styles. He was the castle’s scribe and also my daughter’s tutor.   Biggest challenge in relationships? Well, I was young and silly when I was seduced by a Frenchman and became pregnant at 16. He never married me, just left. So, I’d have to say not having a husband and raising my daughter when I had her out of wedlock was very challenging. I made a mistake and paid for it dearly with the way others treated me after that….

Susie Finkbeiner | Conversations in Character | THE ALL-AMERICAN
Author Guest / July 14, 2023

Book Title: THE ALL-AMERICAN Character Name: Flossie Harding, 11 years old   How would you describe your family or your childhood? I’m the youngest in a family with three children. Chippy, Bertha, then me Flossie. Well, I guess we should include Peggy since she’s married to Chippy and we’re probably never going to get rid of her now. Dad and Mam — that’s what we call our mother because she’s from England — love us all very much. Uncle Matthew does too even though he has a hard time showing it.   What was your greatest talent? Is being the smartest in class a talent? Or maybe reading books meant for adults? Because I’m very good at those things.   Do you have a boyfriend? In my dreams! And in those dreams, it’s Gilbert Blythe. Oh, how I love him.   Where do you live? I was born in Michigan, but I dream of moving to Hollywood so that I can become a movie star. I look like I could be Doris Day’s daughter, so I should have no trouble getting parts.   Do you have any enemies? Would you like a list? I could ask my teacher Miss Lange…

RaeAnne Thayne | A Woman Searches for Peace
Author Guest / July 14, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release? THE CAFE AT BEACH END 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? A woman who has lost everything escapes to Cape Sanctuary, the one place she always found peace as a child, though that means she must confront her cousin, who despises her with good reason. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? This is the final book in my Cape Sanctuary series set on the northern California coast, where each book is only connected by geography. I knew I wanted to write one more book here, a fictional place based on two of my favorite beach towns, Cannon Beach, OR and Pacific Grove/Carmel, California. 4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life? Yes, though I expect it would take time for us to become friends. Meredith doesn’t make friends easily! 5–What are three words that describe your protagonist? Defeated, desperate, resilient 6–What’s something you learned while writing this book? I heavily researched forensic accounting and developed a great appreciation for the behind-the-scenes work that goes into solving many financial crimes. 7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?…

Mariana Zapata | A Slow Burn Sports Romance
Author Guest / July 14, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release? THE WALL OF WINNIPEG AND ME 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? The Wall of Winnipeg and Me is a slow burn sports romance about a personal assistant who has gotten fed up working for her boss, a professional football player. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? Because I’m from Texas, I’m partial to writing about places in the state that I’m familiar with, and Dallas has a very loyal fanbase when it comes to football, so it just made sense. 4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life? Absolutely. 5–What are three words that describe your protagonist? Caring, resilient and loyal. 6–What’s something you learned while writing this book? I learned a lot about plant-based lifestyles and how many athletes follow it. 7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done? I wait to edit until I’m done, and then usually have to go back and rewrite and rework sections at least two more times. 8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence? I’m simple, I’m a sucker for a great ribeye. 9–Describe your writing space/office! I have a nice…
