Giovanna Siniscalchi | Conversations in Character with Rodrick de Montfort, Viscount Saint John

November 2, 2026

Book Title: THE SPY’S SONG
Character Name: Rodrick de Montfort, Viscount Saint John

What is your greatest talent?
Discovering what people would rather I didn’t know. It is remarkable how much a man will reveal when he believes he is the cleverest person in the room.

What do you do for a living?
Officially? Nothing respectable. Unofficially, I collect secrets, sell certainty to men who have none, and occasionally prevent governments from making catastrophically stupid decisions. The third task is by far the most difficult.

Do you have any enemies?
How much space do you have?

Significant other?
A Corsican princess with a knife, an alarming devotion to principles, and absolutely no instinct for self-preservation. She objects to the word princess. Naturally, I use it whenever possible.

What is your biggest challenge in relationships?
Remaining in them long enough for anyone to notice I have one.

What is your opinion of loyalty?
Loyalty is a lie told by the powerful to the expendable. Louise disagrees. Frequently. At volume.

What do you do to entertain yourself?
Cards. Horses. Excellent brandy. Occasionally lying to people who deserve it. I used to include women on that list. I have recently been informed that particular pastime is no longer available to me.

Do you have children, pets, both, or neither?
I have a black Friesian named Brutus. Calling him a pet would offend him. Calling him mine would be equally inaccurate. I provide food, shelter, sugar, and transportation. He provides judgment. We understand each other perfectly.

What is your greatest personal failing?
I am told I confuse self-preservation with philosophy. I prefer to think of it as consistency.

What keeps you awake at night?
People I failed to save. Questions I should have asked sooner. And, on occasion, a ballerina who has somehow concluded that the entire bed belongs to her.

What is your greatest source of joy?
Until recently? Surviving. Now – No. I refuse to answer that on the grounds that Louise will become insufferable.

What is the most pressing problem you have at the moment?
Napoleon Bonaparte’s daughter believes she is perfectly capable of crossing Europe, infiltrating armies, ignoring orders, and surviving Waterloo without me. The truly irritating part is that she may be right.

Is there something you want that you don’t have?
Something I have spent fifteen years insisting I do not want.

Why don’t you have it? What is in the way?
Because wanting someone is the first piece of intelligence you should never hand an enemy. Unfortunately, Louise has never shown the slightest respect for classified information.

Describe Louise Bonnechoix in three words.
Impossible. Loyal. Catastrophic.

What did you think when you first met her?
That she was going to be trouble. I have excellent instincts.

Is there anything readers should know about you before they begin THE SPY’S SONG?
Yes. Whatever Louise tells you, I had a plan. Whether the plan survived her is another matter entirely.

THE SPY’S SONG by Giovanna Siniscalchi

Swans of Paris #3

spy

Napoleon’s daughter has one mission: reach her father. The man ordered to deliver her to him is a British spy. Louise Bonaparte has spent her life proving herself worthy of the name she was never allowed to bear. Fiercely loyal to France, and to the father who does not know she is coming, she will cross armies, borders, and battlefields to stand at Napoleon’s side as Europe rises against him.

Unfortunately, she cannot get there without Rodrick de Montfort.

Cynical, infuriating, and dangerously difficult to read, Rodrick has survived fifteen years in the shadows by trusting no cause and revealing no weakness. Escorting Napoleon’s stubborn daughter through war‑torn France should be another mission.

Until wanting her becomes the one secret he cannot control.

Forced together beneath false names and divided by everything they believe, Louise and Rodrick trade insults, suspicions—and soon far more dangerous intimacies—as the road carries them toward Brussels and the gathering storm of Waterloo.

She believes loyalty is worth any sacrifice.

He knows better than anyone what loyalty can cost. And when love becomes indistinguishable from betrayal, one of them may have to choose between the person they would die for and the cause they have lived for.
