It’s that time of year when I must pick the best mysteries I’ve had the pleasure of featuring on the Cozy Corner throughout the year. I’m not going to lie, it’s my favorite, and least favorite part of this blog. I obviously can’t choose them all, yet every one was featured because it spoke to me in a special way. This year brought us some wonderful who-dun-it to enjoy; favorite series of the past, along with a bunch of new mysteries full of diversity that kept our days and nights busy with memorable characters.
There were also so many novels I couldn’t feature due to scheduling and space constraints—so how did I choose from such a large pool of incredible mysteries which released this year? With high spirits, and a glass of wine to toast each and every author;)
Singapore Sapphire was featured on Cozy Corner blog titled New and Tried and True in September, 2019. A.M. Stuart has a winning start to this series!
Early twentieth-century Singapore is a place where a
person can disappear, and Harriet Gordon hopes to make a new
life for herself there, leaving her tragic memories behind
her–but murder gets in the way.
Singapore, 1910–Desperate for a fresh start, Harriet
Gordon finds herself living with her brother, a reverend and
headmaster of a school for boys, in Singapore at the height
of colonial rule. Hoping to gain some financial
independence, she advertises her services as a personal
secretary. It is unfortunate that she should discover her
first client, Sir Oswald Newbold–explorer, mine magnate and
president of the exclusive Explorers and Geographers
Club–dead with a knife in his throat.
When Inspector Robert Curran is put on the case, he realizes
that he has an unusual witness in Harriet. Harriet’s keen
eye for detail and strong sense of duty interests him, as
does her distrust of the police and her traumatic past,
which she is at pains to keep secret from the gossips of
When another body is dragged from the canal, Harriet feels
compelled to help with the case. She and Curran are soon
drawn into a murderous web of treachery and deceit and find
themselves face-to-face with a ruthless cabal that has no
qualms about killing again to protect its secrets.

I interviewed Melissa Bourbon in August of 2019 on the Cozy Corner blog titled What Lola Wants—We Love. This series is one of my absolute favorites. Ms. Bourbon has put a fresh face on her lead female sleuth, Lola Cruz, who will do whatever it takes to get the job done. Knock down that glass ceiling, Lola!
A Lola Cruz Mystery
The Sacramento Police Department has hired Camacho and Associates for one specific reason: They need Lola Cruz to go undercover at The Broadway, a salsa club suspected of running a prostitution ring.
She fits the description: Young, Latina, beautiful, and a PI.
But the secrets at the club go much deeper than anyone thought, and Lola finds herself embroiled in a dangerous game she may not be able to win.
WHAT LOLA WANTS by Melissa Bourbon – A Henery Press Mystery. If you like one, you’ll probably like them all.
This potion shoppe and black cat, Sashkatu, stole my heart a few years ago. Sharon Pape delivered another knock-out with Magickal Mystery Lore I featured on the April, 2019 blog, Give the Demons a Break. Watch for her upcoming release this spring!
An Abracadabra Mystery #4
This spells trouble . . .
The New Camel Day Fair is a fun-filled event for residents of this upstate New York town. Kailyn Wilde, a modern-day witch of ancient lineage, leaves her potion shop, Abracadabra–and her feline familiar, Sashkatu–to attend with her fortune-telling Aunt Tilly. Joining them is legendary wizard Merlin, who’s discovering new pleasures of time-traveling to the modern world, including curly fries and kettle corn–but the appeal of the Tilt-a-Wheel is beyond his mystical imagination.
The real wild ride begins later, when neighboring sweet shop owner Lolly rushes into Abracadabra with news about a dead body. The victim has one of Lolly’s fudge knives stuck in her back, but in spite of the sticky evidence, Lolly is only one of several suspects with ample motive and opportunity. Meanwhile, Merlin’s research into old family scrolls and electromagnetic ley lines is causing some unusual mix-ups. As the two investigations collide, Kailyn will have to do everything in her power to prevent disaster. . .

You can’t go wrong with any Janet Evanovich book! I love this series and although I miss the spark of Lee Goldberg, Peter Evanovich has brought his own special flair to the series. I featured The Big Kahuna in May 2019.
Fox and O’Hare #6
A stoner, an Instagram model, a Czech oligarch, and a missing unicorn. Nick Fox and Kate O’Hare have their work cut out for them in their weirdest, wildest adventure yet in this latest entry in the New York Times bestselling series by Janet and Peter Evanovich.
Straight arrow FBI Agent Kate O’Hare always plays by the rules. Charming Con Man Nicholas Fox makes them up as he goes along. She thinks he’s nothing but a scoundrel. He thinks she just needs to lighten up. They’re working together to tackle the out-of-bounds cases ordinary FBI agents can’t touch. And, their relationship? Well, there hasn’t been so much explosive chemistry since Nitro was introduced to Glycerin.
Next on the docket: The mysterious disappearance of the Silicon Valley billionaire, known as the Big Kahuna. Kate’s been assigned to find him but no one seems particularly keen on helping. His twenty-six year old adult actress wife-turned Instagram model wife and his shady Czech business partner are more interested in gaining control of his company. For that they need a dead body not a living Kahuna.
The only lead they have is the Kahuna’s drop-out son, who’s living the dream in Hawaii – if your dream is starting your day with the perfect wave and ending it with a big bowl of weed. To get close to the Kahuna’s son, Kate and Nick go undercover as a married couple in the big wave, bohemian, surfer community of Paia, Maui. Living a laid back, hippy-dippy lifestyle isn’t exactly in Kate’s wheelhouse, but the only thing more horrifying is setting up house with Nick Fox, even if he does look pretty gnarly on a longboard. If they don’t catch a break soon, waves aren’t the only thing she’s going to be shredding (or bedding).
Interviewing Ann B. Ross was truly inspiring. We’ve watched her wonderful leading lady ‘grow-up’ through the years and have thoroughly enjoyed her relationship with her grandson, Lloyd. Ms. Ross has opened a fascinating, yet down to earth world with her Miss Julia series that makes mystery lovers savor every new book!
The delightful new installment of the beloved and New
York Times bestselling Miss Julia series
When Miss Julia’s regular doctor goes on vacation with his
wife, leaving a replacement in his stead, Miss Julia is
immediately concerned. Never one to miss an opportunity to
entertain–or size up–a newcomer, she invites the charming
Dr. Don Crawford, and his painfully shy wife, Lauren, to
dinner. While Miss Julia and Sam both note Lauren’s obvious
lack of social skills, it’s her friends Hazel Marie and
Binkie that pick up on some of Dr. Crawford’s less palatable
Meanwhile, Lloyd has gotten his first car, and LuAnne, fresh
off her divorce, has started a job at the local funeral home
and is in urgent need of an occupation-appropriate
makeover–Miss Julia has enough on her plate. Yet there is
just something she can’t place about the Crawfords, and she
won’t rest until she gets to the bottom of it.
As always, hijinks ensue as Ann B. Ross delivers this
delightful and entertaining installment, Miss Julia Takes the Wheel, in her bestselling Miss Julia series.
