Rachel Van Dyken | 20 Questions: THE GODPARENT TRAP

July 19, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release?

THE GODPARENT TRAP

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

When tragedy strikes their friend group and family, two sworn enemies are forced to live together and parent two small children.

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

I typically choose places that I’ve been, for this book specifically, a lot of the book takes place in the suburbs, which makes sense considering the content.

4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

ABSOLUTELY, she’s a hot mess, but also a travel blogger so she gets to eat all the food and stay at all the cool places, plus she’s fun.

5–What are three words that describe your hero?

Rigid, Sexy, Funny

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

I feel like I learned a lot about family not always being blood, that family is what you make it, a home is what you make it, and as long as you have love, you have family.

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

Oh no, if I edit then I end up fixing too much and can never move forward. I always do a rough draft then revise.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

This is a super hard question, but does a nice wine and cheese pairing with grapes count?

9–Describe your writing space/office!

Right now, it’s outside because it’s so beautiful. Typically, I’m inside at my writing station, my office has tons of fan art around it, along with milestones in publishing on my walls, cover art from publishers, stuffed animals, a couch against the wall, and my desk has a giant screen that connects to my laptop so I can see better.

10–Who is an author you admire?

I adore Julia Quinn. I still remember reading Bridgerton over a decade ago and thinking it was so magical and funny.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

One of the books that changed my life was Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers.

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

My very first traditional deal was back in 2012 and I still remember getting my contract in the mail and going oh my gosh this is actually happening. When it came to The Godparent Trap (with the same publisher) I was just so excited that I was able to work with them again especially considering the subject matter. I’m very honored and it still puts a smile on my face.

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

Whatever I’m not writing. I love historical romance and paranormal, lately I’ve been into Sci-Fi.

14–What’s your favorite movie?

Star Wars (The entire series, including the origin stories on Disney plus) OR wait, I have two answers, Gladiator.

15–What is your favorite season?

Fall

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

By sleeping in, I have two kids so, sleep is the best gift!

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I highly recommend Ms. Marvel, I just started it with the kids, and it’s done so well.

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

All food, but if I had to pick, Thai.

19–What do you do when you have free time?

I read, which sounds funny since it’s part of my job, but I love reading.

20–What can readers expect from you next?

I have a New Adult book called THE PERFECTS coming out later this year and another paranormal. Right now, I’m working on another project that has yet to be announced, but I’m really excited about it!

The Godparent Trap

Colby’s living her best life: as a popular food blogger, she gets to fulfill her dreams of exploring the globe. But her world comes crashing down when a tragic accident leaves her co-guardian of her best friend’s two adorable children. Not only does she need to put down roots—fast—but she’ll be sharing custody with the one man she can’t stand sharing a continent with, let alone a house.

Accountant-extraordinaire Rip values rules and plans. But when he loses his sister and his best friend and becomes an insta-guardian all in one night, Rip sees his organized life imploding. What he really doesn’t need is his sister’s irresponsible, flighty—albeit kind and gorgeous—best friend making it worse.

Rip doesn’t trust Colby to take their new responsibilities seriously, while Colby can’t believe Rip thinks children will thrive under his rigid control. Yet soon Rip and Colby discover they need each other more than they hate each other. Could it be possible that following their hearts is just what their new little family needs?
