Shana Galen | 20 Questions: I WANT YOU TO WANT ME

March 8, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release?

I WANT YOU TO WANT ME

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

A grumpy wounded hero makes a marriage of convenience with a sunny heroine in trouble.

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

The hero is wounded physically and a recluse at his country estate. The heroine lives at a nearby estate, so the characters really dictated the setting.

4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

The heroine is Amelia, and I would absolutely hang out with her in real life. She’s really fun and likes to have a good time. She’s also a very compassionate person who cares deeply. I think she’d make a great friend.

5–What are three words that describe your hero?

Grumpy, vulnerable, guarded

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

I learned a lot about Gloucestershire Old Spots, which is a type of pig. The heroine has a pet Gloucestershire Old Spots named Sweetie.

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I wait until I’m done, but sometimes I do go back and change or add to something I’ve written. But I edit the bulk of the book when it’s done.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

I am not a foodie, but I do like a nice glass of wine on special occasions or an amaretto sour.

9–Describe your writing space/office!

I have my own office space in a spare bedroom. The desk faces a window, and I have two huge bookshelves next to the desk. Behind the desk is a five-foot tall cat tree, where two of my three cats like to sleep and play. On the floor next to the desk is my dog’s bed (one of her beds). It’s a cozy space.

10–Who is an author you admire?

Grace Burrowes. Grace is always so generous to other authors and so smart and savvy in business. She’s also always willing to share her knowledge.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. I read it in 12th grade and fell in love with the Regency period. I probably would have been an author regardless, but that book steered me in the direction of writing historicals.

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

I was a 6th grade teacher, and my agent called during class. I knew the book was under consideration, so I took the call and stepped out into the hallway. That’s when he told me I had sold my book. In the meantime, the kids were going wild in the classroom, of course.

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

I like historicals, but when I’m writing a first draft I read zombie fiction. I know that’s kind of weird, but I love the high stakes of those stories and the life-or-death suspense.

14–What’s your favorite movie?

The Princess Bride

15–What is your favorite season?

Spring

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

My birthday is on Christmas, so I just celebrate with family with a special meal and gifts.

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

Going back to zombie fiction, if you haven’t read Sarah Lyons Fleming, you should. Start with her Until the End of the World series. You will not be sorry.

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Italian

19–What do you do when you have free time?

Haha! My daughter is a competitive dancer. I don’t have free time. I guess I watch dance competitions in my free time!

20–What can readers expect from you next?

My new series, The Royal Saboteurs, debuts in August with Beauty and the Thief. It’s available for pre-order now. Cover coming soon!

I Want You to Want Me

A cruel twist of fate…
Nicholas St. Clare, youngest son of the Marquess of Averstow, was an avid horseman until his legs were crushed on the battlefield. The injury sent him home to England a broken man. Ashamed of his injury, he’s become a virtual recluse on his country estate until his mother, the dowager marchioness, insists he marry. Nicholas doesn’t want a bride who would be shackled to his broken body and privately despise him for being a cripple. He hates his weakness and doesn’t believe anyone can see past it.

A stroke of good luck…
Amelia Blackstock has always followed her family motto: A Blackstock doesn’t run from trouble. It runs from us. Unfortunately, trouble caught up with her, and when the world finds out, she’ll be ruined. When Lord Nicholas stumbles upon her sobbing, he tries to comfort her. His kindness backfires when they are discovered alone together, and Amelia faces even more scandal. Nicholas offers to marry her, but only if she’ll agree to a separate bed chambers.

A happily ever after in jeopardy.
Amelia concedes to a platonic marriage, but as her feelings for Lord Nicholas grow, she wants more. Nicholas is drawn to Amelia as well, but he fears risking it all by revealing the ugly truth of his injury. When Nicholas’s brothers-in-arms arrive for a house party, it seems everything that can go wrong, does. Between a lost pet pig, a fugitive wanted for treason, and a night of drinking gone awry, Nicholas and Amelia grow further apart. Nicholas is the last of the Survivors.
