Suzanne Park | Author-Reader Match: THE DO-OVER

April 4, 2023

Instead of trying to find your perfect match in a dating app, we bring you the “Author-Reader Match” where we introduce you to authors you may fall in love with. It’s our great pleasure to present Suzanne Park!

Writes:

I write contemporary romantic comedies with Korean American main characters who are not particularly suave or sexy, and are in fact pretty much the opposite, but you’ll root for them to get a happy ending.

Have you ever had a dream where you need to take an exam for a class you never attended? Well…in my forthcoming comedic novel THE DO-OVER, Korean American career guide author Lily Lee finds out during an employee background check that she didn’t complete her college degree and has to return to college and relive her senior year ten years later. There, she finds out that one of her TAs is her old college boyfriend Jake Cho. What else could go wrong?

About:

I’m a Korean Tennessean who lives in Los Angeles. I left LA after graduating from business school, then moved to Seattle. After eight years I decided I couldn’t handle the rain, and moved back to LA. I like being outdoors but as soon as it gets too hot or windy, I happily retreat to an indoor air-conditioned environment and prefer to wear shorts year-round.

I love writing comedies but enjoy watching and reading dramas, mysteries, and thrillers. I’m allergic to most furry or hairy animals but somehow during the pandemic I acquired two hamsters. In my spare time, I procrastinate.

What I’m looking for readers who enjoy:

  • Romantic comedies that are more com than rom
  • Awkward nerds who are going through a phase of self-discovery while pursuing love
  • Romantic scenes that are closed door (i.e. low spice, simmer not high heat, a fraction of an eggplant…some people would call it sweet romance but that seems almost too sugary-cute for my stories)
  • Workplace comedies in male-dominated fields
  • Feisty, strong Korean American heroines
  • Women’s fiction blended with romance, self-discovery plus romance
  • Quirky narrative voice

What to expect if we’re compatible:

  • High-concept, fast paced stories with humor and depth
  • More layers than you’ll expect in a romcom
  • Main characters who are put through the ringer but get a HEA
  • I’m a former stand-up comic, so you’ll see absurd premises with unexpected payoffs
  • Instagram posts with no themes, just observational humor and vibes. Maybe more hamster and girl scout cookie pics than I’d like…

THE DO-OVER by Suzanne Park

The Do-Over

From the author of the “genuinely funny” and “delightful” Loathe at First Sight (NPR) and “cinematic, charming” So We Meet Again (Emily Henry), a fun rom-com about a young Korean-American woman having to return to college after discovering she’s a few credits shy of completing her degree—only to find one of her TAs is her old college boyfriend.

Lily Lee is a bestselling author of the How to Be a Supernova At Work series, and her editor wants her to strike while the iron’s hot with a new book, How to Land the Perfect Job. But when Lily is offered a coveted position at a top firm, the employer background check reveals she’s short a few college credits and never actually completed her degree. Unbelievably, her worst nightmare has come true.

Lily returns to her alma mater, reliving her senior year of college ten years later. She enrolls in classes, gets invited to frat parties, eats most of her meals with “dining dollars,” and to make things even more weird and chaotic, she discovers that her computer science TA is her old college boyfriend, Jake Cho.

As Lily and Jake reconnect, she sees that her ex has done well for himself: the handsome, charming grad student appears to have his life together while Lily’s so close to losing her dream job opportunity and her book deal.

Things aren’t so simple the second time around.

The Do-Over is a delightfully warm and hopeful story about second chances in love and life, and how the future we want may turn out far different than we imagined.
