Jenn Burke | 20 Questions: OUT OF THE ASHES
Author Guest / May 12, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release? OUT OF THE ASHES. It’s the third book in the Ashes & Dust trilogy.   2–What is it about? It’s the culmination of the story that started in book 1, when someone was threatening to expose the existence of Toronto’s paranormal community. Evan, a vampire PI who deals with chronic depression, and Colin, a creature known as a phoenix who can control fire and magical energy, thought they found out who was behind everything in book 2, but this one throws a few curveballs their way. They’ve got to work with former enemies to truly solve the mystery – but first, they have to deal with the repercussion of Colin’s decision at the end of book 2 to dissolve their forced bond against Evan’s wishes. There are lots of up and downs in this one, but a very firm happily ever after!   3–What do you love about the setting of your book?  Toronto is such a great mix of diverse settings. You’ve got the old-fashioned, touristy promenade of the Distillery District, industrial areas that make for great locations for out-of-sight paranormal shenanigans, and lakefront beaches for quiet moments. In this book,…

Jenn Burke | Exclusive Excerpt: HOUSE ON FIRE
Author Guest / November 11, 2021

We settled into a silence that was less awkward than I’d worried it would be. Colin played with his phone—he’d discovered a daily crossword puzzle app that could keep him occupied for hours. I thought about sketching, but decided I had a better way to spend the time. I pulled up a website I’d scoped out earlier on my phone. “Hey, Col?” “Yeah?” “Can I ask you some questions?” “I guess. Why?” I shrugged. “Oh, I dunno. To get to know you better.” “Sure, shoot.” He turned his attention back to his game. “Would you like or dislike inspecting a roof for leaks?” “Considering I have no idea how I’d do that, dislike.” “No, but, pretending you did know how to do it, would you like doing it?” He looked off into the distance for a moment, and I took the opportunity to make sure Evelyn’s house remained still and inactive. “Yeah, I guess if I had the skills, I’d like it. It would get me outside.” I clicked like on the form. “Okay, cool. What about analyzing the structure of molecules?” “What? No. I’d be in a lab all day.” He shuddered. Dislike for sure, then. “Coordinate a business…

Jenn Burke | Title Challenge: ALL FIRED UP
Author Guest / May 20, 2021

ALL FIRED UP is the first book in my new Ashes & Dust series, which is a spin-off set in my Not Dead Yet universe. It follows Evan Fournier, a.k.a. Vamp Junior from Not Dead Yet, as he settles into his own as a private investigator and a vampire in paranormal Toronto. When his partner PIs, Wes and Hudson, are called away to handle a family emergency, Evan is left in charge of the agency with the firm instruction that he is not to take on any paranormal cases. But when a longtime friend comes to him for help, how can he say no? Suddenly he finds himself undercover at a spa retreat that looks like a perfect getaway for stressed-out paranormals—except people are returning home without their magic. Why? And what does the mysterious (and kind of sexy) Red have to do with it? Join Evan as he works to determine who’s behind the latest upheaval in Toronto’s paranormal community. The story continues in House on Fire (out November 2021) and Out of the Ashes (out 2022). *** A is for Anika, Evan’s doctor and friend, who comes to him for help. L is for London, where Wes and…

We’re back with another stop on our Fall Slow Cooker Recipe Potluck! Don’t forget to comment below for a chance to win an eBook copy of today’s featured book. And be sure to check back at all of the other great posts this week: Day 1 with Elizabeth Goddard: http://freshfiction.com/page.php?id=10267   Day 2 with Soraya Lane: http://freshfiction.com/page.php?id=10269 Day 3 with Laura Lee Guhrke: http://freshfiction.com/page.php?id=10270  *** In the Not Dead Yet series, Wes Cooper and Hudson Rojas have the chance to rekindle the romance they abandoned thirty-three years before–thanks to Wes being a sort-of-but-not-quite ghost and Hudson being a vampire. The paranormal side of Toronto seems to be invested in making them work for their happily-ever-after, though. In the third book in the series, Graveyard Shift, Wes and Hudson have shared all of their secrets and are solidly a team, all-in with each other, their found family, and their business as private investigators. But Toronto’s not done messing with them. Someone’s out there, poisoning shifters with specially made street drugs. There are newbie vampires running amok. And a threat from Hudson’s past might steal his and Wes’s happily ever after for good. Both Wes and Hudson are cooks, but not cooks, if you get my meaning….
