Jennifer J. Chow on Career Struggles, Inspiration, Female Sleuths, and Celebrating 35 Years of Sisters in Crime!
Author Guest / September 23, 2022

For our readers who may be unfamiliar for Sisters in Crime, can you give a little info on what makes it special and what this celebration on September 24th is about? Sisters in Crime is an amazing nonprofit that was founded to provide equity for women crime fiction writers. Here is the 1987 mission statement: “To combat discrimination against women in the mystery field, educate publishers, and educate the general public as to the inequities in the treatment of female authors, raise the level of awareness of their contributions to the field, and promote the professional advancement of women who write mysteries.” The September 24th celebration is about celebrating SinC’s 35 years as an organization!   As a mystery fan, most of the mysteries I read happen to be written by women. The first mysteries I ever read were by Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers. What inspired you to write mysteries? The first adult mysteries I read were by Agatha Christie, and I fell in love with whodunits. I particularly enjoyed Miss Marple, who is both intelligent and underestimated. I also adored the puzzle aspect of Christie’s mysteries as well as the quaint community setting.   What challenges, if…

Jennifer J. Chow | 20 Questions: DEATH BY BUBBLE TEA
Author Guest / July 4, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release? DEATH BY BUBBLE TEA 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? Two cousins with opposite personalities, forced to run a food stall together at a local night market, get a serving of murder. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? I love night markets and live in Los Angeles, so I combined the two for the fictional Eastwood Village Night Market setting. 4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life? For sure! I’d hang out with both cousins…although maybe not when they stumble over dead bodies. I’d certainly tag along on their outings to visit hidden Los Angeles attractions, though. 5–What are three words that describe your hero? Yale Yee: filial, bookish, and curious 6–What’s something you learned while writing this book? That there was a California lawsuit against silver dragées (those metallic balls used for decorating cakes and cookies). 7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done? Apart from minor word choices, I wait until I’m totally done—and then a lot of revising happens! 8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence? Hawaiian chocolate dobash cake: a chocolate chiffon cake with…

Jennifer J. Chow | Exclusive Interview: MIMI LEE READS BETWEEN THE LINES
Author Guest / November 9, 2020

Hi, Jennifer! Welcome to Fresh Fiction! Can you tell us about yourself and your latest Sassy Cat Mystery novel, MIMI LEE READS BETWEEN THE LINES?   Thanks for having me. I’m excited to be on Fresh Fiction today! A little about me: I write multicultural mysteries, and I live in Los Angeles, where I’m constantly on the hunt for all things matcha. In Mimi Lee Reads Between the Lines, pet groomer Mimi Lee takes her big sister role to the max by trying to get her young sister off the police’s radar. Mimi Lee owns a pet-grooming business and has a talking cat! Where did you get the idea for this delightful series?   I grew up reading Garfield comics and loved his snarky attitude. Also, I was always drawn to this idea of a pet-owner connection, so I figured a telepathic sassy cat would make a great sleuthing partner–and add to the humor. I love an amateur sleuth! What do you think makes Mimi a great detective? Does she find situations or do the situations find her?  Mimi is a bold sleuth who’s willing to take chances to get to the answer. She really perseveres, especially when loved ones…
