Terri Brisbin | 20 Questions: RAGING SEAS

July 7, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release?

RAGING SEASWarriors of the Stone Circles. It’s the second in what will be a 4-book paranormal/fantasy historical romance series.

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

When the ultimate evil threatens humanity, an ancient bloodline of warriors returns to defend them. Ran and Soren must put past betrayals behind them and accept their destiny – and their new powers. Will love be enough to save them all?

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

When I planned out this series – a first time for me since I usually plan book by book! The locations of the 4 books are all set near standing stone circles all over the British Isles. My guide to where to find the circles was a book about circles with a map that showed four areas of concentrated circles, so I chose one in each of those! I looked for lesser-known circles OR made up my own in Southern Scotland, Orkney, southwestern England and Ireland.

4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

Yes! Ran is a strong woman, molded by love and betrayal, who knows her own mind and is an experienced businesswoman in medieval Orkney. I would love to travel with her.

5–What are three words that describe your hero?

Passionate. Loyal. Strong. (hunky, gorgeous, sexy too!)

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

When I was searching for a place to put my stone circle, I decided it must be in a certain location in Orkney north of Scotland. While researching that area and water levels at the time of the story (yes, down a rabbit hole I went!), I found that they’ve discovered a manmade, circular stone structure/platform under the water EXACTLY where I chose! Wooowooo! Also, I needed there to be a ‘basement’ or area underneath the Broch of Gurness and brochs (tall, round stone towers found mostly in Scotland) don’t have basements! (like the Alamo in the PeeWee Herman movie! LOL). Well, as I was writing this book, archeologists found a stairway near the Broch that leads. . . under the tower! Lots of fun things while researching this series.

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I edit as I write – usually editing what I wrote last before writing new. Then, when finished, I do several read-throughs and clean up what I’ve missed.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Sausage gravy over biscuits!

9–Describe your writing space/office!

Cluttered! Actually, once my son moved out, I claimed his bedroom and made it mine. 5 bookcases with my research books and my keeper books I can’t give away. The normal stuff is there too – desk, printer desk, more research books, supplies, my collection of dragons along the bookcases, etc. I chose to go with purple (actually plum) carpet and have drapes to match. It may look a mess, but I know where everything is!

10–Who is an author you admire?

I admire so many authors for so many reasons, too many to list! I will say I admire Kathryn LeVeque for charging into the indie historical romance market and setting up her own publishing company to help her friends get their books out. Oh, and she’s a kickass historical romance writer, too!

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

I remember one of the first – maybe the first – romance I ever read MANY years ago was SUNRISE OF SPLENDOR by Joyce Verrette. It combined my love of ancient Egypt with romance and made me aware that historical romances existed. Then, Julie Garwood’s THE PRIZE brought me kicking and screaming to historical romances in 1992 and that obsession eventually led me to writing them!

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

THE CALL for my first published book happened way back in 1997 after pitching my second completed romance at a NJ conference – a time travel historical set in medieval Scotland. I was at home – in a hospital bed – recuperating from fracturing my spine (for the SECOND TIME) when editor Cindy Hwang at Berkley/Jove called with an offer. Lots of screaming ensured and A LOVE THROUGH TIME came out the next year. 52 more have followed since.

This current series – one that took months to plan even after the story idea bothered for months before that — was originally published by Signet. My agent had ‘shopped it’ and then a new editor reading submissions from her predecessor’s list found it, loved it and offered – but only originally for the first 3 of the 4 books. They closed the line before acquiring book 4!

Now – Oliver Heber Books has acquired the first three AND will be publishing the final book – SEARING MOON in early 2024! (Pssst – there’s a dragon on the cover!)

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

My reading for fun is about 95% historical romances and the rest varies all over the genre. But half of all my reading is non-fiction research!

14–What’s your favorite movie?

The American President, The Fifth Element, Dave and more! Can’t pick just one…!

15–What is your favorite season?

Winter – it is cold (I hate heat unless I’m in a pool or the ocean), my allergies lessen *usually* and I love to watch the snow fall.

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

I’m pretty low key about mine – usually just dinner with my hubby or family. (BUT – I love to plan parties for others – I’m doing that now for my hubby’s upcoming birthday!)

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

Oh my – how can I choose? TV/Movies – love ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING series and JERRY AND MARGE GO LARGE movie. Books – DEATH by Laura Thalassa (the final book in her Horsemen of the Apocalypse series was so satisfying!) and THE BASTARD by SM Laviolette (aka Minerva Spencer)

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

I just like plain, good not-spicy food – with some Italian or Asian thrown in occasionally!

19–What do you do when you have free time?

Read. Watch tv. Catching up on travel now after two+ years without it.

20–What can readers expect from you next?

I’ve been writing a bunch, so I have a couple of releases coming up later this year – HER HIGHLANDER FOR ONE NIGHT is the next book in my A HIGHLAND FEUDING series for Harlequin Historicals – it’s a September release available August 23! Then, BLAZING EARTH – Book 3 of WARRIORS OF THE STONE CIRCLES – is rereleased on September 27th. AND – THE LADY TAKES IT ALL, the first in my UNEXPECTED HEIRS OF SCOTLAND series from Dragonblade comes out later in the Fall. It’s an Edinburgh-set Regency series about 3 people who inherit titles or wealth or power unexpectedly… I’m having fun writing that first one now since it’s been a while since I wrote Regency historicals (2005!).

RAGING SEA by Terri Brisbin

Raging Sea

Warriors of the Stone Circles #2

An ancient goddess drawing her followers closer to free her from her prison. . .
A man who discovers he can control the winds and storms. . .
The woman he betrayed who must trust him if they are to conquer the evil one. . .

Soren Thorson thought his uncle’s stories of an evil force trying to return to destroy their world just another tale of outdated gods. When the powers rise in his blood and he can call and control the winds and sky, Soren realizes he is part of a bigger plot. And when groups of strangers arrive in Orkney and threaten the one woman he loved and lost, he is willing to do what he must to protect her. He never expected it meant battling others who held the powers of ancient gods within them.

After Soren’s betrayal, Ran Sveinsdottir turns her attentions to learning and controlling her father’s trading company. Until a powerful and terrifying man arrives and uses her father to force her into his dark plan. Until she discovers that her affinity to water and the sea is much, much more than simply that.

As more innocent lives are put at risk and the future of humanity hangs in the balance, Ran must discover the truth about Soren and her own new powers and decide if she can risk her life, heart and soul to the one man who’d thrown them away once before.
