Henry

A seagull’s call pulled me from my slumber, and I cracked open one eye, my face buried in the pillows. If I hadn’t known better, I would have thought I was still dreaming because a goddess was standing before me. Dressed in my tunic and nothing else, Sophie was drinking coffee, her stunning hazel gaze fixed on me.

“Good morning,” I drawled, lifting my head off the pillows. My lips stretched in a lazy smile, revealing my fangs.

“Good morning,” she replied before taking another sip.

Her golden-brown hair was tousled, and I could smell the salty sea air clinging to her skin. I could also smell my scent mixed in with her floral aroma. Seeing her in my clothes, smelling like me, felt surreal. I still found it hard to believe she was mine. Mine…mine… The word echoed in my head as I let my gaze roam over every inch of her magnificent body before I forced it back up to her face.

“What are you doing?” I asked, low and thick. I knew my eyes had turned darker as desire for her had invaded my blood.

“Enjoying my coffee before I enjoy you,” she replied, her voice husky and lush with promise.

“You are not going to make me wait, are you?” I teased, rolling onto my back. When I did, the light top sheet slid off my naked form.

Sophie’s gaze dropped to my hard chest before trailing lower. I knew she wouldn’t be able to resist me. I thanked the gods every day that she craved me as much as I craved her. When she dragged her gaze back up to mine, the swirling hues of brown and green in her eyes had disappeared, overtaken by black.

She moved to step toward me, and my blood heated in anticipation. I couldn’t wait to have her in my arms. I could never grow tired of the feel of her body on mine. Almost to the bed, she reached out to put her coffee cup on the bedside table, but before she could, her knees buckled, and she went to crumple to the floor. I was at her side in an instant, clasping her shoulders to hold her up. The sound of the cup shattering and liquid splashing barely registered as I looked into her wide eyes. Her gaze was distant and unseeing.

“Sophie, are you hurt?” I asked urgently, quickly scanning her for injuries.

“No,” she replied, finally meeting my gaze. “I just… I saw something…”

“Through the threads?”

“It’s Ezra,” she rasped. “He was attacked… I think… I saw… I don’t know what I saw.”

All color drained from my face.

“It’s okay. We will figure it out.”

“Is it over?” she asked in a hushed tone.

Before I could respond, a gust of wind billowed the curtains hanging over the door that led onto the porch. Sophie glanced outside, and her expression turned longing. She longed to stay at our cottage by the sea, lost in our love and each other, but we couldn’t. The alarming vision she had just experienced was driving us back to New Haven. I had known that the moment of peace we had carved out for ourselves wouldn’t last, but I had hoped for more time before our next trial. The look Sophie was giving me told me she had hoped for the same. Right then, she needed reassurance from me that we would return to our safe haven.

“Over? No, darling, it’s not over. We will be back here soon. We own this place, remember?” I forced a smile to put her at ease, but it swiftly faded. “Let’s go check on Ezra. Once we are sure he is okay, we will return here.”

When she gave a small nod, I gently kissed her forehead. After making sure she was steady on her feet, I quickly cleaned up the fragments of the broken cup and the spilled coffee before walking to the bathing chamber to get ready. She didn’t immediately follow after me, and I used the few moments alone to regain my composure. I had wanted to reassure her that we would return there, but my chest felt tight with unease. A sense of foreboding slithered down my spine as I prayed to the gods I hadn’t given her false hope.
