It’s romance Wednesday and so a perfect time to bring up “cowboys!”

The term can imply the rugged cowboys of the Wild West totin’ a Colt 45, or it can mean a fearless, young bull-rider matching wits with the meanest bull in the country. It can be the hard-working rancher setting out on a cattle drive in Montana, or a determined farmer plowing his fields atop his John Deere as he prepares to plant his crops.

To me, however, the term “Cowboy” is an attitude. It’s a way of viewing work, life, and loyalties. It’s a no-nonsense, sometimes stubborn to a fault, but tender as a newborn lamb ideal. And it is all of these examples that fuel the foundation for my contemporary rancher series, THE KINNISON LEGACY.

Meet Wyatt, Rein, and Dalton—the formidable men of the Kinnison Legacy. When tragedy strikes the lives of three young boys, they are placed under the care of wealthy cattle baron, Jed Kinnison. He raised three as his own sons, leaving everything to them, including a special dream he had for the ranch.

RUGGED HEARTS, BOOK I, in this series features Wyatt Kinnison, oldest of his three brothers. Aside from his stellar dark and brooding good looks, Wyatt is the quintessential first-born son. His headstrong, take-charge attitude (some might call him, bossy.) makes him the one chosen to stay at the ranch and make sure things there are running smoothly. After a long day of checking fences and watching for predators to his cattle, Wyatt likes to kick back, watch a little bull riding on TV, or settle down with a good book. He also enjoys taking classes through an online community college on topics that interest him. But it’s his chance meeting with second grade teacher, Aimee Worth and later when he goes head-to-head in his on line poetry class with an unknown fellow student, that his sequestered life begins to unravel. RUSTLERS HEART, BOOK II, in the Kinnsion Legacy, features the story of Rein Mackenzie. Jed Kinnison’s nephew. An easy-going guy, he finds himself playing referee to his two brothers. Confident, intelligent, and often the peacemaker of the family, once Rein makes up his mind on a matter, he goes after it with a vengeance.

Which is why the arrival of Liberty Belle Stenapolas—the recently discovered half-sister of his brothers–throws a kink into his well-laid plans. While the rest of the family and community accept her, Rein fights—with every possible reason—his growing attraction to her. Liberty has the same trouble, about ready to give up on her silly infatuation, until one night when neither wants to fight anymore. What is supposed to be nothing more than a hot, summer fling, takes a deadly turn when Liberty’s past catches up to her, endangering everything and everyone they both love.
