Ann Aguirre Interview – Talking Boss Witches, Thrillers, and Intergalactic Badasses

March 10, 2022

Your book BOSS WITCH comes out April 5th. It’s described as an “opposites attract paranormal romcom”. What attracts you to stories with characters who are opposites getting together?

Opposites are like magnets with a positive and negative charge. They’re drawn together irresistibly, but the challenge is whether the characters can make it work long-term. And that’s where the fascination comes into play. Two people with wildly different viewpoints… the idea that they can form a lasting partnership and turn those variations into a complementary relationship—where one supplies what the other lacks? It’s the ultimate form of optimism and makes us feel brighter about real life opposition.

How would you describe Gavin in BOSS WITCH? What makes a good hero to you?

Gavin is lonely and tormented. He hates his job, and he’s been isolated from the world by an emotionally abusive parent. What he wants more than anything is a place to belong. As for what makes a good hero, as long as he meets his fictional partner’s needs, that definition can apply to any type of character.

Your thriller THE THIRD MRS. DURST sounds intriguing. As an author, is it a much different process writing a thriller compared with writing a romance?

Yes, writing thrillers is completely different, and for me, it’s extremely difficult. I rewrote that book like four times. It’s so complicated, and it doesn’t come natural to me. I really respect those who do it well.

LIKE NEVER AND ALWAYS is a thriller with teen characters. Are teenagers more difficult to write than adults? Would you describe this book as a psychological thriller?

I don’t really differentiate. The main difference is what they might know or focus on, and some of that depends on the character’s personality. Liv was interested in biology, and Morgan was into art, for example. It’s intended to be a thriller, but it’s also a study in trauma and recovery. And there’s romance as well, because I always include a love line.

Tell me about your GALACTIC LOVE series. When I look at the cover of RENEGADE LOVE, the character looks very mechanical. Is the main character a cyborg?

The GALACTIC LOVE series is a science fiction romance series set in space. I wanted to play with the ‘abducted by aliens’ and ‘fated mate’ tropes. So I inverted everything and had a blast.

Book one, STRANGE LOVE, has been called utterly bonkers and completely irresistible. It’s basically The Hunger Games meets the Bachelor. Also, there’s a talking dog.

Book two, LOVE CODE, is about an amnesiac AI who winds up in an organic body and starts fake dating the scientist who saved him. There’s also a talking Pherzul (cat-dragon).

Book three, RENEGADE LOVE, is about an alien bounty hunter who gets hired to capture a human grifter who’s part of a space circus. And you’re asking about the suit; that’s the power armor that the bounty hunter wears. There’s also heist, a sentient plant person with anxiety, a family reunion in space, and two faintly murderous droids.

A few authors I’ve interviewed have said that the kind of books they enjoy reading are not the kind of books they enjoy writing. Is that true for you? What are some of your favorite books? Favorite authors?

I read by mood. Sometimes I want to read nothing but gooey-sweet happy endings. Other times, I want something more suspenseful. So basically, whatever I feel like reading, I’ll try something in that vein.

Favorite authors… Courtney Milan, Charlotte Stein, Jeanne Lin, Sharon Shinn, Rebekah Weatherspoon, Farrah Rochon, Shawntelle Madison, Lilith Saintcrow, Skyla Dawn Cameron, Jackie Lau, Tanith Lee, Kristin Hannah, Lisa Kleypas, Karina Halle, Robin LaFevers, Xio Axelrod, Tessa Dare, Adriana Anders, Victoria Helen Stone, Mia Sosa.

To find favorite titles, wander their backlist and you’ll find some amazing work.

What are you currently working on?

It technically hasn’t been announced yet, but I think this interview will be posted after my official announcement, so I’ll tell you. Currently, I’m writing a reality show dating sim for mobile phones called PAIR OFF.

I’m halfway through the script. There’s an artist drawing the characters and programmers are working on coding. I hope the game will be ready by August, but if there are delays, it will definitely be ready by early 2023.

BOSS WITCH by Ann Aguirre

Fix-It Witches #2

Boss Witch

The second in an adorable witchy rom-com series by New York Times bestselling author Ann Aguirre, perfect for fans of:

  • Ride-or-die female friendships
  • A bisexual heroine who stubbornly refuses to accept help
  • A hero with an incredibly pesky moral conscience
  • A mouse named Benson who may or may not have all the answers to life, magic, and love (Spoiler: he does!)

Clementine Waterhouse is a perfectly logical witch. She doesn’t tumble headlong into love. Rather she weighs the pros and cons and decides if a relationship is worth pursuing. At least that’s always been her modus operandi before. Clem prefers being the one in charge, always the first to walk away when the time is right. Attraction has never struck her like lightning.

Until the witch hunter comes to town.

Gavin Rhys hates being a witch hunter, but his family honor is on the line, and he needs to prove he’s nothing like his grandfather, a traitor who let everyone down. But things in St. Claire aren’t what they seem, and Gavin is distracted from the job immediately by a bewitching brunette with a sexy smile and haunting secrets in her eyes.

Can the bossiest witch in town find a happy ending with the last person she should ever love?
