Georgie Blalock | What My Research Revealed About the Duke and Duchess of Windsor
Author Guest / July 29, 2024

The Duke and Duchess of Windsor’s romance is often called the love story of the century. Writers gush about their grand passion, and lavish lifestyle as part of European high society, and many memoirs, including the Duke and Duchess’ autobiographies, paint an overly rosy picture of the couple. I discovered during my research for THE WINDSOR CONSPIRACY, that the truth behind their romance and lives is actually much darker. Below, I share some of those tidbits, as well as some lighter facts I learned while researching THE WINDSOR CONSPIRACY. The relationship between Kind Edward of England and the twice divorced American Wallis Simpson is often called the romance of the century. The truth is very different. There is a great debate on whether or not Wallis really loved or wanted to marry Edward. She called him Peter Pan behind his back and once wrote to a friend “I’d rather be the mistress of the King of England than the wife of the Governor of the Bahamas.” She wanted to be Queen of England and was furious when the King abdicated and cheated her out of a crown and turned her into an international pariah. Her illicit activities with the Nazi’s…

Cynthia Eden | Why do we love anti-heroes?
Author Guest / July 29, 2024

I have a confession. I absolutely love an anti-hero. Maybe my anti-hero obsession began with Spike when I used to watch Buffy episodes. The minute Spike stepped onto the TV screen, I forgot all about Angel.  And, then, of course, Dexter started airing, and I found myself rooting for the serial killer who was hunting other serial killers.  How did that even happen? And I know I’m not alone in my love for the anti-heroes when it comes to romance books.  These heroes are hugely popular but…why? Well, I have a few suspicions. The heroine is who matters to the anti-hero. The anti-hero may not care about many things in this world, but he will go to his knees for the heroine (pretty much just for her).  If it’s a choice between her and the rest of humanity, ahem—sorry, humanity. The anti-hero will choose her. The anti-hero keeps you guessing. A normal hero tends to be pretty true-blue. You know what he’ll do in dangerous or stressful situations (hint—it’s the right thing). But an anti-hero? Oh, no. You can’t predict him.  And the surprise is half the fun. An anti-hero answers to no one but himself. He has his own…

Sofia Robleda | A Tour of 16th Century Guatemala
Author Guest / July 26, 2024

Oh, hello there, hola…   My name is Catalina Cerrato of House Ajaw K’iche’, and I do believe I’ve been asked to give you a tour of my home. This is a rather difficult question as I “lived” in the 16th century, and truly I had several homes all over Guatemala. However, you’ll be pleased to know (or at least, I was pleased to discover) that one of my homes is still standing after all these years, and so are the towns in my book, although some have different names by now. Let’s start with the tiny town of Santa Cruz del Quiché, where my story begins. ‘Tis a mountainous place, green and lush, and scented by forest pines. It used to be called Q’umarkaj, the capital city of the K’iche’ Maya people, my mother’s people. At one point there were several stone palaces and pyramid temples, not quite as sizeable as our most famous ones in Tikal, which are pictured here, but still, rather lovely. Unfortunately, their stones were pilfered by my father’s people and used to build their Catholic church. Next is Santiago de los Caballeros, now known as Antigua. For hundreds of years it was the capital…

She’s a mother of three, recently separated and grieving her mom. She’s basically stuck – sweatpants all day and her unread mail is stacked in the sink – until one day she meets this adorable guy who is just in town for a little while. She gets it in her head that what she needs to do to get unstuck is have a summer romance. (spoiler: it works!)   Marie: In my opinion, SUMMER ROMANCE should be the pick for women’s fiction lovers in search of a perfect beach read. While delivering on the implicit promise of…

India Holton | Rival ornithology professors hunt through England for a rare magical bird
Author Guest / July 25, 2024

1–What is the title of your latest release? THE ORNITHOLOGIST’S FIELD GUIDE TO LOVE 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? Rival ornithology professors hunt through England for a rare magical bird. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? I originally considered having the characters travel across Europe, but considering the complexities involved in that, such as different languages, currencies, cultures, and so forth, I chose to limit my research to England and France. 4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life? Absolutely. Beth is very much a woman I’d be friends with. 5–What are three words that describe your protagonist? Clever, kind, intrepid. 6–What’s something you learned while writing this book? I learned more than I could possibly ever need to know about the structure of a bird’s feather! 7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done? I edit as I draft; it’s an integral part of my process. Besides, I’m never totally done! I could go on rewriting and editing a book forever if someone didn’t rein me in. 8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence? Smoked chicken fettucine. 9–Describe your writing space/office! My desk is set…

Sara Driscoll | Author-Reader Match: ECHOES OF MEMORY
Author Guest / July 25, 2024

Instead of trying to find your perfect match in a dating app, we bring you the “Author-Reader Match” where we introduce you to authors you may fall in love with. It’s our great pleasure to present Sara Driscoll!   Writes: I discovered my love of mysteries and thrillers as a child with Nancy Drew and have never looked back. I write thrillers (the FBI K-9s and NYPD Negotiators series) and mysteries (Abbott and Lowell Forensic Mysteries) that reside firmly in the real world. My first standalone novel, ECHOES OF MEMORY, deals the horrors of witnessing a murder the protagonist, Quinn Fleming, knows she’ll forget within the next hour because of post-traumatic amnesia, and is deeply set within the world of those who struggle with the significant challenges of recovery following traumatic brain injury.   About: I’m a retired bench scientist who knows entirely too much about infectious diseases in my current career as a thriller author (post pandemic, no one wants to read a biothriller and I don’t want to write one…). I’m also a cat rescuer who meant to rescue one cat from a shelter and ended up rescuing three more cats either from a downtown alley or from…

Melinda Curtis | Meet the Blackwells
Author Guest / July 24, 2024

The Blackwells is a multi-author series published by Harlequin Heartwarming (the line most like Hallmark movies). In this lighthearted cowboy series, Elias “Big E” Blackwell has managed to alienate his entire family by his desire to run the large Blackwell Ranch alone. Now that he’s in his eighties and feeling his mortality, Big E is determined to bring the family back together—all branches of the family. This simple premise has led to a 20-book, sweet romance series divided into four connected sets: Books 1-5: Return of the Blackwell Brothers (Big E’s 5 grandsons) Books 6-10: The Blackwell Sisters (Big E’s 5 granddaughters from a son he didn’t know he had) Books 11-15: The Blackwells of Eagle Springs (Big E’s sister’s 5 grandchildren) Books 16-20 (releasing July-November 2024): The Blackwell Belles (Big E’s sister’s 5 granddaughters) Let’s meet the Blackwell characters I’ve written: In Book 3, THE RANCHER’S REDEMPTION, cowboy/jaded lawyer Ben Blackwell is called home because former friend Rachel is suing Big E over water rights. Ben has avoided returning to Falcon Creek for a multitude of reasons, not the least of which was that he was jilted at the altar by Rachel’s best friend. At first, he’s not worried…
