Fresh FIction Box Not To Miss
David Lewis | All-female WWII counter-espionage unit
Author Guest / July 24, 2024

1–What is the title of your latest release? A JEWEL IN THE CROWN 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? Caitrin Colline belongs to an all-female WWII counter-espionage unit, and fights alone to save the Crown Jewels from the Nazis — but has 360 degrees of enemy. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? I only write about places where I have lived or spent some considerable time. That included: London, Scotland, Wales, and Portugal. 4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life? I should be so lucky! Winston Churchill calls her his redheaded packet of Welsh persistance. I probably couldn’t keep up. 5–What are three words that describe your protagonist? Brave, intelligent, compassionate. 6–What’s something you learned while writing this book? I learned all over again just how much I love writing. 7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done? My writing has changed. Originally, I wrote an outline and used it as a guide. The last three books are more like an archeological dig: start with a shovel and then end up using a fine brush to reveal the details. I spend a lot of…

Michael Callahan | A rising Oscar-nominated actress vanishes without a trace
Author Guest / July 24, 2024

1–What is the title of your latest release? THE LOST LETTERS FROM MARTHA’S VINEYARD   2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? In 1959, a rising Oscar-nominated actress vanishes without a trace. Sixty years later, a young woman is stunned to discover the grandmother who raised her was, in fact, this actress—and sets out to solve the mystery of what happened the summer that changed her grandmother’s life.   3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? Other writers start their ideas with their characters or plots—I always start my books with where they take place. Because when I look for a novel to read, if I am not interested in the location, I tend to pass it by. My first book took place in Manhattan in the 1950s; the second in Atlantic City, Manhattan, and Newport in the late 1940s. I clearly have a thing for glamorous midcentury locales.   4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life? Well, I have two dual stories going, one in 1959 and one in 2018, so I have two different heroines. But yes—though I think I would prefer Mercy, the slightly more prominent of the…

John Fram | A Gothic estate, murder, and a protective father
Author Guest / July 24, 2024

1–What is the title of your latest release? NO ROAD HOME 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? A young father must protect his queer son from a TV preacher’s demented family when a murder strikes at their crumbling Gothic estate. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? For whatever reason, I always seem to come back to my home state of Texas. There’s just so much here to draw from: dramatic weather, massive landscapes and very weird families. 4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life? Absolutely. Toby is probably the toughest guy I’d ever know. 5–What are three words that describe your protagonist? Loving, gentle and ruthless. 6–What’s something you learned while writing this book? The Bible is absolutely loaded with references to the Zodiac and other mystical traditions. 7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done? I always start the day by reading over what I did yesterday and end by reading over the day’s work. It’s a pretty constant process of rewriting. 8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence? Expensive Cheddar is pretty amazing. 9–Describe your writing space/office! I am very lucky to have two…

Hannah McKinnon | Two opposite families find themselves reluctant new neighbors
Author Guest / July 23, 2024

1–What is the title of your latest release? THE SUMMER CLUB 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? Two opposite families- one working class New York transplant who’s come into money and one small-town middle-class native who’s fought to work his way up for his family- find themselves reluctant new neighbors. The Birches, who appear the perfect family, live in an idyllic coastal Massachusetts neighborhood where father Ned is the president of the country club, Mayhaven, and golf-phenom daughter Darcy has just shattered his dreams by announcing she’s walking about from the sport. In come new neighbors- Stan, Josie and her son, Flick-urban transplants, who arrive with high hopes for a fresh start, along with their giant RV, late night noise, and an expectation: to elbow their way into Mayhaven. What ensues is a summer of neighborhood upheaval, new love, letting go, and the discovery of an alarming secret that Ned’s daughter Darcy asks new neighbor Flick to keep. TSC is a story of the dangerous assumptions we make, no matter our privilege. It’s also the cautionary tale of parents with good intentions but wide blind spots, and the risks we take when we’re desperate to belong. 3–How did…

Thao Votang Conversations in | Character with Linh Ly
Author Guest / July 23, 2024

Book Title: LINH LY IS DOING JUST FINE Character Name: Linh Ly   How would you describe your childhood? Typical, I suppose. I went to school. I went to parties as a teenager. My parents worked to keep me fed and the refrigerator full. They sometimes fought. Parents always fight, don’t they?   Significant other? (Laughs.) Pass.   Biggest challenge in relationships? I’m not what guys want or think they want.   Where do you live? In the metroplex, you know, that unending mass of cities that connect and surround Dallas and Fort Worth in Texas. It’s not really inspiring. It’s highways and heavy traffic. There are always so many cars — people driving somewhere at all hours. It’s huge and anonymous.   Do you have any enemies? Sure, but they don’t know it.   How do you feel about the place where you are now? Is there something you are particularly attached to, or particularly repelled by, in this place? It’s all that I know. I like the night drives I take. I love driving for hours on end. It’s my most peaceful experience.   Do you have children, pets, both, or neither? Lollipop is my cat. She’s the best….

It’s our great pleasure to present Katrina Emmel!   Writes: My young adult romances are a comfort meal on the page. NEAR MISSES & COWBOY KISSES features the rivals-to-lovers journey of Riley Thomas, an artistic California girl, and Colton Walker, a quiet Nebraskan cowboy, who are forced to spend a week together on the Oregon Trail.   About: A New Englander in Southern California by way of the Midwest, I’m a science geek who enjoys planting milkweed for monarchs, arts and crafts, and making up silly songs with my kids. I love spending time with my family, especially when we’re on unexpected adventures or discovering a new favorite food. When I’m not momming, writing, or working, I enjoy watching mysteries featuring savvy leading ladies (i.e., MURDER, SHE WROTE, MISS FISHER’S MURDER MYSTERIES, MISS MARPLE,…

Kari Lee Townsend | Conversations in Character with Zoe Robinson
Author Guest / July 19, 2024

Book Title: RESOURCEFUL (Portrait of a Woman #2) Character Name: Zoe Robinson   How would you describe your family or your childhood? I felt like an only child even though I wasn’t, but that didn’t stop me from having a great childhood. My grandmother raised me, and I lacked for nothing. I was on the cheerleading squad, and that’s where I met my best friends, Zoe Robinson, Harmony Jones, and Morticia Smith. Over twenty years later, and we’re still best friends, lifting each other up and supporting each other every step of the way.   What was your greatest talent? I teach sensual massage for a living and own a full-service massage parlor with a wonderful staff.   Significant other? My ex-husband, Bud Grant, was a construction worker who helped build Grammy’s house. His family was friends with my grandmother, so I took a chance on him. Big mistake! I don’t ever want to get married again.   Biggest challenge in relationships? Everyone in my life that I have cared about has left me, so I don’t trust easily. I would rather push people away than risk getting hurt again.   Where do you live? In an apartment above my…

Dani Collins | A Second Chance at Love
Author Guest / July 18, 2024

1–What is the title of your latest release? FORGIVING HER FIRST LOVE 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? He broke her heart eight years ago. Now he’s her boss and she has nowhere to go. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? I created Raven’s Cove from a real-world place called Denny Island on British Columbia’s central coast. My cousin worked there for over twenty years and my aunt had been to visit him in 2016. I saw her photos and thought, “What a great place to set a book!” My husband and I visited in 2018 and the layout of my village is very much like the real place with some artistic license. 4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life? Absolutely! Sophie has a dark, sarcastic sense of humor, but she’s honest and, beneath the tough exterior, very kind and sensitive. 5–What are three words that describe your protagonist? Since I answered this for Sophie above, I’ll say that Logan, the hero, is sinfully sexy, a teensy bit entitled, but a genuinely decent person beneath the sarcasm. 6–What’s something you learned while writing this book? So many hits by…
