Hi, everyone, I’m so glad to be here today. It’s March! The month of spring. I don’t know about you all, but I have had enough of being isolated. Between winter and covid, the days seem to drag on endlessly. I, for one, am ready for a fresh start. It’s a new year, full of new possibilities, and brand-new books!
DARK SEAS (Coldwater Cove book 1) comes out on March 8th.
The book takes place in a fictional little fishing village called Coldwater Cove in Maine. I’ve never lived in Maine, but I’m fascinated by the majestic state. I love the rugged coastline and cliffs, the powerful ocean, the quaint towns, the harbors filled with fishing boats, and the lighthouses.
Maine lends itself as the perfect backdrop for a suspenseful book. I set Coldwater Cove to border Canada, with Nova Scotia right across the bay. With so much of Maine being remote, there aren’t enough border patrol agents to plug all the holes. Inspection stations and checkpoints are so spread out that many sections are unmanned for hours. Even with cameras and motion sensors in place, if an illegal immigrant, trafficker, arms dealer, or terrorist slipped through and was seen, he or she would be long gone by the time the agents got there. This opened the door for several book ideas.
In the first book, DARK SEAS, Stacy Buchanan’s mother drowned ten years ago. Stacy moved away to follow her dream of becoming a sports journalist, but when her father’s health declines, she moves back to help him. After she moves back, a key piece of evidence reveals her mother’s death may not have been an accident. The setting plays a big role in adding suspense to the situations Stacy finds herself in. Rugged terrain and unpredictable weather with a killer on the loose who will do anything to keep the past buried made this book exciting and fun to write.
The next book in the series, FROZEN WATERS, will come out July 12th and I am writing that book right now. So, tell me, how important is the setting to you all when you choose a book to read?
