Lynette Eason | 20 Questions: ACTIVE DEFENSE

January 8, 2021

1–What is the title of your latest release?

ACTIVE DEFENSE

2–What is it about?

As a former field surgeon in Afghanistan, Heather Fontaine is used to life-or-death situations. She just didn’t expect them to follow her home. When she returns from a party to find that someone has broken into her house–and threatened her friends–she assumes it is the stalker who has been following her and creeping her out. She hopes to find safety and peace of mind by leaving the city and hiding out in a small town. But trouble has followed her even there.

Luckily, a stalker isn’t the only one watching Heather. Travis Walker has been secretly watching out for her for weeks. As owner of his own security agency, it’s what he does. Together, Travis and Heather must figure out who wants her dead–and why–before it’s too late.

3–What do you love about the setting of your book?

I love that it’s set in the city where I grew up–which is great because I know the “lay of the land” so to speak. 🙂

4–How did your main character(s) surprise you?

Heather was a complete surprise, to be honest. When she appeared in the other two books before this one, I knew only a little bit of her backstory. I knew she was strong, I knew she’d grown up in the foster system, and I knew she was a physician, but that was about it. When it came time to write her backstory–and what happened with her parents, I was kind of shocked.

5–Why will readers relate to your characters?

Heather’s been “through it.” She’s had It rough from the get-go, but she deals with it all like the heroine she is. She’s strong but learns to lean on others. She hates being afraid but pushes through the ear to overcome. She’s a lovely woman but isn’t without her fair share of trials and trouble. I think readers will love her.

6–What was one of your biggest challenges while writing this book (spoiler-free, of course!)?

Getting it right. LOL. That’s the biggest challenge with EVERY story. I want it all to be accurate. I never want a reader to roll their eyes because I got it wrong–or it looks like I didn’t do my research. I’m not saying my books are flawless, but I DO do my very best to get it right. 🙂

7–Do you look forward to or do you dread the revision process?

LOVE IT! I know that the revision process is the time where everything is going to come together and the story is going to be the best it can be in the end.

8–What’s your favorite snack to have on hand while writing?

M&Ms or Milk Duds. A lot of days I force myself to eat carrots, though…sigh.

9–Where would you go for an ideal writer’s retreat?

Anywhere that has SPA in the name.

10–What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve received?

Put words on the paper. Don’t worry about if they’re good or bad, but just get them on there. You can fix them later. You can’t fix a blank page.

11–Who is the fictional character you want to hang out with the most? (anyone in literature!)

Sherlock Holmes. Only now, after watching the movie Enola Holmes, I might switch to her.

12–What’s one of your earliest book memories?

Sitting on my mom’s lap and her reading to me.

13–If you had to write in a different genre, what would it be and why?

Historical fiction. More specifically, Westerns. I love history so the thought of being buried in research from the 1880 sounds like so much fun!

14–What song will automatically put you in a good mood?

I don’t really like a lot of music. But I love country so anything by Reba or Carrie Underwood always makes me smile.

15–What is your favorite way to practice self-care?

This goes back to that SPA word…:)

16–What can you eat and never get sick of?

Chocolate. And tacos. And fried chicken. And Lo Mein, and …oh, did you need just one? Sorry…

17–Will you share a favorite, recent-ish book you recommend?

Just one??? Not possible. How about… Airborne by DiAnn Mills, In Too Deep by Lynn H. Blackburn, The Way of the Brave by Susan May Warren, absolutely anything by Carrie Stuart Parks, Colleen Coble, and Robin Carroll. Really liked Smokescreen by Terri Blackstock, too. And it’s not fiction, but I MUST mention my husband’s new release, The Loneliness Solution (I think the title speaks for itself.)

18–Do you have any hobbies?

I’ve really gotten into photography. When I’m not writing, you can find me with a camera in my hands looking for dragonflies, hummingbirds and unsuspecting family members. 🙂

19–Are you an early bird or a night owl?

Early bird!

20–What can readers expect from you next?

Book Four in the Danger Never Sleeps Series is coming. It’s called HOSTILE INTENT and is Ava Jackson and Caden Denning’s story.
