Nancy Naigle | 20 Questions: CHRISTMAS ANGELS

December 20, 2019

1) What’s the name of your latest release?

Christmas Angels.

2) What is it about?

Growing up, Liz Westmoreland dreamed of taking over her grandparents inn located in the small mountain town of Angels Creek only for it to be sold before she ever got the chance. While browsing the internet, she stumbles upon a listing for what looks to be the picturesque inn and it’s set to go to auction. Liz places a bid, and by a miracle, wins the auction. But when she gets there, she finds the property in significant disrepair.

When Matt Hardy narrowly lost the inn and property that butted his land, he just hoped it wasn’t another city slicker coming to make matters worse after the previous owners gutted the place for an art gallery. But the minute he recognized the sweet, freckle-faced girl from his childhood and heard her plans to reopen the inn, he jumps at the chance to help his childhood crush restore a place where he made so many fond memories.

While working on repairs, Liz and Matt discover her grandmother’s collection of angels in one of the cabins. When the angels start mysteriously showing up all over the inn, she begins to look at them as reassurance–that restoring the inn is what she’s meant to do. But when an accident leaves Liz feeling like she made a mistake, will Matt–and the residents of Angels Creek–be able to show Liz that she’s found a home? And possibly true love as well?

3) What word best describes your heroine?

Determined.

4) What makes your hero irresistible?

He’s able. He can fix just about anything and who doesn’t love that in a man?

5) Who are the people your main characters turn to when they need help?

Maisey, the owner of the local diner, is the one who always help everyone in town connect-the-dots. Luckily, Liz met Maisey the first day she came back to Antler Creek.

6) What do you love about the setting of your book?

The fictional town of Antler Creek is set in the mountains of North Carolina up in the area where Blowing Rock and Boone are located.

7) Are you a plotter (follow an outline) or a pantster (write by the seat of your pants)? Plotter.

8) What is an ideal writing day for you?

Play all day, and write from ten o’clock in the evening until one or two in the morning. I love it when the world seems to go quiet each night. It’s my favorite part of the day.

9) Do you listen to music while you write, need total silence, or do you have the TV on?

I never listen to music. No play lists for this girl. I prefer quiet.

10) How do you approach research?

As needed. I usually end up researching a lot of things that never end up in a book. I simply come up with questions while I’m working that I want to know the answers too and then off I go.

11) What is your publishing journey story?

It wasn’t until I was 40 that I even gave writing a thought. I’m 57 now and have over 30 works in publication, including seen that are part of the hilarious southern cozies – G Team Mysteries – co-authored with Kelsey Browning. It’s been my dream come true to have a couple of my novels optioned and produced for the Hallmark Channel. <3 I love my job.

12) Do you have critique partners/writing groups you want to give a shout-out to?

No. It’s just me and my mom until my editor reads the manuscript for the first time.

13) What’re the most frustrating things about being an author?

I have to say that being an author is the best job in the world. I think my biggest frustration is people seem to think I’m available to play all day, and that I can get the novel written as long as I get an hour or two in somewhere. I have to really have uninterrupted time to do my best and most productive work. That’s hard to juggle with competing priorities.

14) What’s your favorite scent?

Bacon in the morning.

15) What movie will you watch no matter what if it’s on TV?

Message In A Bottle. I <3 Garret.

16) Do you like breakfast, lunch, or dinner best?

Dinner.

17) What’s one thing you wish you knew more about?

Screenwriting. I’m working on learning more about that now.

18) What’s the silliest thing you’ve recently done?

I spent over an hour helping my fiance’s seven-year-old son super-duper wrap a Christmas present. We used boxes, string, knots, cardboard, wrapping paper, packing tape and a whole giant roll of bright red duck tape. Then put that in another box, and repeated the process two more times. He was SO excited about tricking his dad on Christmas to get to the present. It was adorable. We giggled and whispered the whole time. I can’t wait to experience the unwrapping of our handiwork together.

19) What can readers expect from you next?

I just wrapped up my 2020 Christmas novel for St. Martin’s Press. We’ll be announcing the name and cover at the first of the year. I can’t wait to share more details.

The Secret Ingredient, a novel released by Hallmark Publishing in 2019, was optioned by Crown Media and will air on Hallmark Channel around Valentine’s Day 2020. (Pssst-there’s a second movie in the works too. Stay tuned for more details soon.)

I’m writing the novelization of the third Christmas in Evergreen story! I wrote the first two and now Christmas in Evergreen: Tidings of Joy is coming my way. I love those “red truck” movies. It’s so different writing a book for a movie that has already been made. I don’t have the freedom of building my own town, instead I have to find creative ways to help the reader re-experience what they’ve seen in a way that is just as beautiful as Hallmark created it.

Everything you’ll see from me will be uplifting, hope-filled and most likely set in a small town, because I just love the dynamics of them, and the beautiful patchwork of the locals.
