If she was going to build a new life in Elm Ridge, she needed to become a social animal again. Basically, she needed to get a life, and that wouldn’t happen if she remained hidden under the covers. The invitation won over the impulse.
“Boys,” Ashton said to his two assistants, “meet Grace Baker. She joined my firm a few weeks ago, and I still can’t get over how lucky I am to have snatched her away from the big city.”
“Thank you, but I’m the lucky one.” This time she meant it.
Desperate to get away from Manhattan, she’d had no idea where to go. And then, by accident, she’d stumbled onto his ad. At the time, she’d thought it divine intervention.
Incredibly, there was a human-sized law firm in a small town looking for a non-belligerent general practitioner. Yep, the ad was every answer to her prayers.
“Grace, these handsome devils are two of my nephews,” Ashton said. “This is Jaxon. He’s a horseman.”
She shook the hand Jaxon extended. Rough and calloused, just how she’d imagined a cowboy’s hand would feel. His sky-blue eyes shone with kindness.
“Nice to meet you, Grace.” He flashed a magnificent smile filled with warmth.
“Very nice to meet you too,” she answered. “A horseman?”
“What he means is that I breed horses and run an equestrian training facility.”
“And this year he’s opening it to kids,” Ashton added.
Before she had a chance to ask anything more, Ashton continued with the introductions, “And this fellow here is Colton, a Bourbon man.”
Colton’s skin was as smooth as his brother’s was rough and his eyes darker than night, the deepest shade of chestnut she’d ever seen. Frowning, he shook her hand and studied her face intently.
Before she could ask what being a Bourbon man entailed, Colton asked, “So you think you can adapt to country life?”
“I’m sure going to give it my best shot.”
“Interesting.” Still holding her hand, he tilted his head as though memorizing her features.
Strangely, the prolonged contact didn’t feel awkward at all, possibly because she was drawn in by his thoughtful gaze.
Calling them back to reality, Ashton broke the spell. “Colton, your steaks!”
Slowly letting go of Grace’s hand, Colton flashed her an apologetic grin and turned his attention back to the grill.
“Let me introduce you to the rest of the family.” Ashton caught her arm and escorted her away from the fire.
Glancing over her shoulder, Grace noticed Colton had dutifully returned to his task of cooking meat while Jaxon, with an amused smile, watched her and his uncle walk away.
What had just happened? Had she ever felt such an instant connection with anyone? Maybe not, but one thing was for sure, Jaxon had noticed too, and from the look of him, it was making his day.
Oh well, whatever she imagined she saw— real or not— Grace was only interested in making friends. Just friends.
She’d learned the hard way, she couldn’t be anything more. After all, she was damaged goods.
