Peggy Ehrhart | Lemon Poppy-Seed Cookies
Author Guest / November 28, 2023

In the opening scene of KNITMARE ON BEECH STREET, my amateur sleuths Pamela Paterson and Bettina Fraser are shocked to discover a dead body when they accompany the town’s welcome committee on a visit to a new resident. After the group has finished talking to the police about the grisly find, a member of the committee invites everyone to her house, where they regain their composure with the aid of coffee and lemon poppy-seed muffins. I thought it would be fun to invent a cookie version of this popular muffin variety. Pamela loves to bake and prefers to start from scratch when she embarks on one of her yummy creations, but some cooks appreciate short cuts. Here’s a recipe that comes together very quickly, thanks to the fact that it’s based on ready-made cookie dough. Poppy seeds can be quite expensive if you buy them in the small jars sold with other herbs and spices at the supermarket, but they can be found in bulk online and at some ethnic groceries. I buy mine in bulk and store them in the freezer between baking projects. They keep for ages. This recipe makes 16 very large cookies. You can divide the…

Yummy Recipes and Cozy Mysteries by Peggy Ehrhart
Author Guest / September 26, 2022

Chocolate-Orange Cheesecake Pie Yummy recipes are a big part of the world inhabited by the Knit & Nibble knitting club of Arborville, New Jersey, featured in my Knit & Nibble cozy mystery series. The club meets once a week and the member hosting the meeting serves coffee and dessert, usually homemade. Holidays also present an opportunity for baking and feasting. In DEATH BY CHRISTMAS SCARF, my amateur sleuth Pamela Paterson, founder and mainstay of the knitting club, bakes a special cake as her contribution to the festive Christmas dinner hosted by her best friends, Wilfred and Bettina Fraser. It’s an orange-flavored yellow cake with vanilla cream filling and chocolate buttercream frosting. I think of Christmas and oranges as going together, perhaps because in earlier times oranges were one of the few fresh fruits available in the winter, though even they would be imported from sunnier climes unless one lived in California or Florida. My husband, who grew up in Illinois, recalls that Christmas always brought a box of oranges from Florida, a gift from his grandfather who lived there in his retirement. Since the recipe for Pamela’s special cake is included at the end of DEATH BY CHRISTMAS SCARF, I…

Peggy Ehrhart | Strawberries on the Brain
Author Guest / May 10, 2021

Food is almost as important as knitting in my Knit & Nibble mysteries. The members of the Knit and Nibble knitting group take turns hosting the club’s weekly meetings, and each week’s host serves a sweet treat with coffee and tea at break time. I include at least one recipe in each book, often for the sweet treat baked and served by my amateur-sleuth protagonist, Pamela Paterson. In devising the recipes that my characters make and serve, I like to keep the time of year in mind. Knitty Gritty Murder takes place in May, so I have Pamela bake a rhubarb cheesecake for the knitting group. The recipe for that creation appears at the end of the book and photos of it appear on my website’s Knitty Gritty Murder page. But May is also the month for strawberries. Knit and Nibble’s only male member, Roland DeCamp, prides himself on doing his own cooking when it’s his turn to host the group. But he’s not the most experienced cook, so I give him simple recipes. In Knitty Gritty Murder, he serves Strawberry Jell-O Pie, which I learned to make in high school and which requires little more than a box of…

Peggy Ehrhart | All the Comforts of Chocolate + Giveaway!

Stay safe! Stay inside! Limit trips to the grocery store! We’re all hearing advice like this as we wonder how long the coronavirus is going to be with us. Food writers suggest inventorying our pantries for overlooked supplies and creating meals out of what we have on hand–though my trips to the grocery store have revealed that many people are limiting their trips by buying a few months’ worth of food at once, including the woman I saw with two filled-to-capacity carts, pushing one and pulling the other. But I like the idea of discovering and putting to use supplies I had forgotten I had. With this in mind, I explored the contents of my freezer yesterday and found . . . half a package of brownie mix! It was hidden way in the back, between the box of raisins and the bag of walnut halves (I freeze almost everything I don’t use often). The brownie mix dated from last year when I was experimenting with a way to make easy cookies for my Knit & Nibble mystery #6, Knit of the Living Dead, coming out this August. As you can guess from the title, it has a Halloween theme,…

Debbie Wiley | Crafty Cozy Mysteries + My Own Hobby!
Author Guest / March 9, 2020

Loom knitting is one of my favorite hobbies, besides reading, of course! The creativity and joy in finding the right yarn to match a pattern has ignited my creative senses and inspired me to seek out other crafts. Whether it’s a scarf, a shawl, or a blanket, each crafty adventure I take is both relaxing and inspiring. I thought it would be fun to share a few of my recent favorites with you guys before jumping into the books. Each one of these lovely loomed items is an act of love, as I often donate my work to charity, especially since I like using some of the thicker yarns and I live in Florida! And now onto the books. . . Peggy Ehrhart’s upcoming release, A FATAL YARN, is the fifth book in the Knit and Nibble series, and knitting is at the heart of the mystery. I love that the local trees are suddenly gaining sweaters, even better than the sweaters are to hide the dreaded X marks that signal the tree is marked for removal. Peggy Ehrhart has created a likable cast of characters and the entire concept underlying A FATAL YARN is sheer fun. Never mind that…

Debbie Wiley | Crafty Cozies as Self-Care
Author Guest / January 13, 2020

Mindfulness and self-care are hot button topics right now in our fast-paced, technology-driven world. Whether it’s gratitude journals, vision boards, yoga, self-help books, etc, everyone nowadays is looking for ways to refresh and re-energize themselves, particularly with 2020 launching a whole new decade. Reading is also a way to rest and rejuvenate, particularly if it’s books that spark your imagination and creativity. What better place to look than cozy mysteries with a crafty theme? I’ve seen hygge yarn in the stores, but it’s Sally Goldenbaum’s A MURDEROUS TANGLE that sent me to google to learn more about the hygge lifestyle. The Seaside Knitting Studio is hosting its first holiday hygge and all the members are looking forward to a quiet gathering knitting or crocheting before a warm fire in their comfortable clothes with hot spiced cider and homemade cookies. Unfortunately, a murder disrupts the town of Sea Harbor and now the Seaside Knitters are tracking down a murderer in their midst. Sally Goldenbaum’s warm and inviting characters make me want to pull out my loom and knit with soft music and the scent of lavender in the air. If you’re looking for a cleverly crafted mystery that also inspires you…
