Samantha Chase | Digging into the ‘Montgomery Brothers’
Author Guest / April 25, 2018

By Susan Gorman Samantha Chase is my favorite contemporary author. I love her Montgomery Brothers series featuring a matchmaking uncle and his sons, nephews and nieces. William Montgomery’s charming personality and his schemes captivated me and I couldn’t wait to see which couple would be featured in the next novel. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to share breakfast with Samantha Chase when she visited The Boston area last weekend! Over orange juice and omelets, we talked about the Montgomery family… Susan Gorman: I was surprised to learn that the Montgomery series was a trilogy—WAIT FOR ME, TRUST IN ME
and STAY WITH ME featuring Lucas, Jason and Mac Montgomery— and that it was indie published! It seems like a lifetime ago that I first released WAIT FOR ME! Oh my goodness, I had no idea what I was in for when I introduced the Montgomerys! This was the series that really was the breakout for me. Susan Gorman: Can you tell us how the series developed into nine books, and about the journey from indie to traditional publishing? Honestly, I never envisioned the series going beyond the original three. That was the plan – a trilogy. Readers were very…

Reader/Author Match | Lynette Eason digs into ‘Oath of Honor’
Author Guest , MatchMaker / April 16, 2018

About: Busy, with an overactive imagination, Romantic Suspense author seeks readers for fast-paced stories with well-developed characters who they will relish getting to know and hate saying good-bye to. What I’m looking for in my ideal reader match: The idea of the perfect date includes a rainy afternoon settled in by the fire with all the doors locked. Be sure to have e-reader batteries charged or plenty of light for your paperback. Don’t forget the chocolates, perhaps your favorite drink—and your Glock on the end table. Because the suspense might leave you hearing things…like the creak of an opening door or footsteps in the hallway…you get the idea. How fun is that? Dreams of a pounding heart and flowing adrenaline each time they pick up the book. Falls in love with heroes who fall in love with strong women who can take care of themselves, but don’t mind a helping hand from time to time. Demands justice for the victims and cheers when the bad guys get it in the end! #alwaysahappyending Doesn’t mind reading about heart-tugging topics that make you want to go out and do your part to change the world—even if it’s just for one person. Someone…

Elizabeth Heiter | How I Write Suspense
Author Guest / April 9, 2018

At every new book launch, certain questions pop up again and again: “Where do you get your ideas?” “What’s the process of writing a book?” It’s different for every writer, and while my process has evolved some over the years, fundamentally it’s stayed the same through ten published novels: The Big Idea: For me, every book begins with a big idea, something that gets me excited. Usually, it comes in the form of “What if…” In STALKED, my latest psychological suspense, it was “What if a teenager disappeared, leaving behind a note that said if anyone was reading it, she was already dead?” That first idea bloomed into more questions: “Was she really dead? Why would she leave a note like that instead of trying to get help before she disappeared? Was it really the teenager who left the note, or someone else?” The big idea stage can take a while: I may discard a lot of ideas before I find one that both excites me enough as a hook (something compelling enough to intrigue a reader to want more) and has enough depth and possibility to it to sustain an entire novel (100,000 words!). Once I’ve settled on that…

L. L. Bartlett | Meet Jeff Resnick, your next favorite sleuth
Author Guest / April 2, 2018

Jeff Resnick never asked for the gift he was given. Gift? More like a curse. And that curse was? Becoming a little bit psychic. But don’t way the “P” word infront of him. Maybe he’s in denial. After all, experiencing weird stuff just wasn’t a part of his life … until the mugging. That’s when things changed. Broke and broken, he’s forced to accept help from his estranged, older half-brother, thus losing his home and the new job he was about to begin. Forced to go back to a city he had no love for and a house that was never a home. Visions of a slaughtered deer hung to bleed out take on a terrible new meaning when a local banker is found in just that condition. How could Jeff have known? Why did he feel compelled to find out more about the man, about the murder? As an insurance investigator, with crime scenes his specialty, Jeff knows what it takes to look into these matters. Too bad his brother, physician Richard Alpert, isn’t an enthusiastic collaborator. He’s convinced that these so-called visions are the manifestation of an injured brain, and he’s only willing to go so far to…

The Complete Guide to Lisa Kleypas’ Series
Readers / March 26, 2018

By Miranda Owen About a million years ago, while hanging out in various online historical romance book groups, people kept extolling the virtues of Lisa Kleypas’ books. Specifically, readers said that nobody writes to-die-for heroes like Lisa Kleypas does. Particular favorites in the book groups were Zachary Bronson from WHERE DREAMS BEGIN and Derek Craven in DREAMING OF YOU. These self-made, passionate men are incredibly complex characters and capture a reader’s imagination. I enjoyed Zachary’s story, but I am firmly and forever Team Alex rather than Team Derek. Over the years, my Lisa Kleypas addiction grew. Whenever there’s a reader poll for top ten favorite heroes, I find a majority of my picks are created by Lisa Kleypas. My favorites include Alex from THEN CAME YOU, Nick Gentry from WORTH ANY PRICE, Simon Hunt and the devilish and delicious Sebastian from the Wallflowers series, and Leo Hathaway in MARRIED BY MORNING. I was ecstatic when I first learned that Lisa Kleypas was coming out with the Ravenels series, since I’m wild for her historical romances. Happily, this series does not disappoint. The deliciously gothic setting of Eversby Priory combined with the passionate Ravenels makes for entertaining stories. The heroines in…

Six Sinners and One Saint Capture our Hearts
Top 5 / February 20, 2018

By Miranda Owen In general, I prefer the nice guy, Clark Kent-type heroes to bad boys. But if I do like a bad boy hero, I like him to have hidden depths. All the heroes on this list are nothing short of amazing, and would make great fictional dates to snuggle up with for an hour or two this month of love while reading their stories. Benedick Lisle is a vicar, a gentleman, a great listener, and a hunk. This gallery of rogues and rakes are a tantalizing group of charming yet complicated hotties. Callum MacCreath and Mick Trewlove are men bent on revenge, but are swayed by love along the way. Julian Danvers and Ruan Bettancourt fall head over heels by a woman who takes them by surprise. Rhys Tremayne makes an unlikely knight-errant, but manages to wear it well and win the woman of his dreams. Lord Dutton has taken a few well-deserved knocks over the years before proving himself worthy of Anne Staverton. I invite you to check out these six sinners and one saint.   WALLFLOWER MOST WANTED by Manda Collins. Benedick: “Don’t make a saint of me, Sophia. I’m a man. Nothing More. I do…

Elizabeth Heiter | The five suspense novels I’m loving right now
Author Guest / February 12, 2018

Writers all get their start as avid readers, and most of us never stop devouring books. One of the coolest benefits of being an author is getting the inside scoop about upcoming books. So, I want to share with you some of the books that have just released within the past month – or are coming soon – that I’ve already read and loved, or can’t wait to get my hands on! Here are those books – and a secret look behind the scenes from each author! (Make sure you read to the bottom to see how you can win signed copies of two of these fabulous books now!) BREAKING POINT by Allison Brennan What it’s about: Lucy Kincaid is on the hot-seat with her new boss, but that won’t stop her from helping her friend JT Caruso find his sister, who goes missing while working undercover in a human trafficking organization. Go behind the scenes: Breaking Point is a Lucy Kincaid book, but former cop Bella Caruso kicks off the book and I immediately fell in love with her. Bella is both smart and dangerous, and is willing to take any risk to protect the most innocent in society….

Allison B. Collins | Who doesn’t love a cowboy?
Author Guest / February 6, 2018

Thank you so much for having me on the Fresh Fiction blog. I’m thrilled to be here to talk to readers about the first book, A FAMILY FOR THE RANCHER, in my new series, Cowboys to Grooms, with Harlequin Western Romance. I love cowboys—specifically the horse-riding, boot-wearing, yeehawing type, not the football-playing type. So when I had a dream a couple of years ago about five brothers who worked a ranch in Montana with their dad, I knew I had to turn it into a story. Or actually, into five stories, since of course I had to focus on one brother per book. *GRIN* How do I love cowboys? Let me count the ways. They evoke a sense of honor, a code of ethics, that no one else has. Book one, A FAMILY FOR THE RANCHER, introduces the oldest brother, Nash. Home from the military, and a lot worse for wear, he has a code of ethics that saw him through battles that nearly broke him. He’s struggling to find his place again, with the family and on the ranch. They love the land they live, work, and play on. In book two, FALLING FOR THE REBEL COWBOY, Wyatt Sullivan…

Interview | Lynne Connolly talks SINLESS, M/M romance, and love in Georgian England
Author Guest , Interviews / February 1, 2018

Monique Daoust: It is my pleasure to welcome Lynne Connolly to Fresh Fiction! Congratulations on your new book SINLESS, which I loved! Lynne Connolly: Thank you so much. It’s wonderful to be here. Monique Daoust: Lynne, you have just started your new series, The Shaws, and the second book, a novella, features an m/m romance, your first, I believe. What prompted you to do an m/m romance in the middle of the series? Lynne Connolly: It was all because of the hero, Darius. He is the twin of Valentinian, the hero of an Emperors of London book, and he’s a notorious dandy and man-about-town. Val had tired of his outrageous behaviour some time ago, but he kept it up for his brother because Darius was gay in an age when it was illegal. You could be hanged for it. So Val acted as cover for an increasingly irritated Darius. So many people asked me to write Darius’s book that I had to do it. Monique Daoust: SINLESS and The Shaws are set in the Georgian era; would you tell us more about the research you had to do regarding homosexuality? What surprised you the most? How was homosexuality perceived at…
