Where is Kathy Lyons?
Author Guest / October 23, 2018

Guess where I was this weekend? Home with my feet up, my cat on my lap, as I binged watched Firefly and Serenity. (Again) Dancing with the Stars. As in out in my backyard with my husband as we celebrated empty nesting. New York to see as many Broadway shows as we could cram into 3 days. At Shameless Con in Orlando where a TON of fun is had by all. Answer: D — Shameless Con! I met lots of great friends there—old and new. Had a wonderful time at the Entangled Candy and Spoons party. (I was the dealer so my body was not in danger as people dove across the table for spoons and huge towers of books as prizes) Here’s a picture of me at my booth before we started. And then there are great pictures of the Meredith Wild after party. So many great costumes! (It was Wild Circus themed) And lastly, this is me dealing Spoons in Entangled Publishing Candy and Spoons event! Whew! Then I rewarded myself!

What to stream in October? We’ve got you covered: Hulu / Netflix / Amazon Prime
Streaming , TV / October 4, 2018

October is just a few days away, and the fall TV season is almost in full swing. That means it’s the perfect time to check in with Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime for next month’s streaming selections. If you’re looking forward to “Huluween,” there’s no shortage of horror flicks to be found. Truthfully, all three of the major streaming services are playing up the horror genre this month. It was a quiet summer, but the pace of original series is picking up again with a few that we’ve been eagerly anticipating. Before we jump into the full October lineup, we’re throwing the spotlight on five can’t miss shows. Into the Dark: The Body Is Into the Dark a film or a TV series? Blumhouse’s new original show may be a mixture of both. Each extra-length episode of Into the Dark will be spread across 12 months, as each installment offers a horror tale inspired by a particular holiday. “The Body” hits first, arriving this October with the tale of a contract killer on Halloween night. To get his payday, the killer will have to carry around a body on the spookiest night of the year. Let’s just say that avoiding detection may not be…

Kathy Lyons | GUESS WHERE I AM!

HOTEL CALIFORNIA (aka Mission Inn) in Riverside, CA How many of you know the cover of the Eagle’s album Hotel California? That’s actually a picture of the Mission Inn located in Riverside, California. It’s a fabulous hotel with lots of interesting nooks and crannies. I went there for the Historical Romance Retreat and joined in the scavenger hunt. The organizer (Renee Bernard) did a great job, and the hotel staff members were wonderful as they directed us around the hotel, former abbey, and former mission. I don’t have room here for all the pictures I took, but I’ll give you an idea. First off, here’s the scavenger hunt list. Here’s items 2 and 3—the oldest bell and the biggest bell. You can’t read the plaque, but it says this bell of Spanish origin dates from 1247 AD and is considered the oldest bell in Christendom. Item 4 – Napoleon and Josephine were the two birds. We searched a long time for Item 8 – the smallest door still in use. The tiniest one pictured isn’t still in use, but the other two were. Item 11 the Glockenspiel was huge. It’s hard to see here, but there are two figures inside,…

France, Fashion, And Fortitude
Author Guest , History / September 24, 2018

With Paris Fashion Week beginning September 24, lovers of style and all things French turn their eyes to the City of Lights. In addition to producing iconic clothing, France’s twists, turns and sometime abrupt societal changes—from monarchy to revolution to empire–have long inspired historical novelists. Moving chronologically, we start with MADAME TUSSAUD: A NOVEL by best-selling author Michelle Moran. Trained by a Swiss doctor she calls her uncle, Marie Grosholtz becomes a skilled artist in the sculpting of wax and an astute businesswoman who helps run the family firm, Salon de Cire, which displays wax portraits and tableaux of the foremost personalities in France. Although her family’s home is a meeting place for budding revolutionaries like Desmoulins, Marat and Robespierre, when the royal family, impressed by her artistry, invites her to become a tutor to Princess Elizabeth, she cannot refuse. But as she gets to know her student, the king, and the queen better, she finds herself balancing a fine line between sympathy for her royal employers and the increasingly strident demands of the reformers. And when reform becomes the madness of the Reign of Terror, she must put pragmatism before loyalty and do what is necessary to insure that…

Cleo Coyle | Top 5 Reasons Readers Demanded More Haunted Bookshop Mysteries
Author Guest / September 24, 2018

Some characters haunt you long after the book is done. That’s what fans of our Haunted Bookshop Mysteries told us after we stopped writing them. For nearly ten years their emails, notes, and posts implored us to revive the series. With this month’s publication of The Ghost and the Bogus Bestseller, we finally did. We even dedicated the book to our readers, who wouldn’t rest until we brought Jack back. And who is Jack? THE HARDBOILED GHOST A tough PI from the mean streets of New York, Jack Shepard lived on the seamier side of life. His death (in 1949) was no picnic, either, leaving him with a hardened outlook, especially when it comes to judging people and their motives. Despite his troubled spirit, Jack has a wicked sense of humor, and he can’t help cracking wise about the absurdities of modern life—from bottled water and “smart” phones to television cop shows. THE PRIM BOOKSELLER A young widow with a little boy, Penelope Thornton-McClure once believed in spirits, until a succession of tragic losses took her faith away. Slowly, Jack Shepard is restoring that faith, and though Pen bristles at his retro male attitude, she’s encouraged by the strangest irony…

KILL THE QUEEN

Dear Readers: I started reading epic fantasy in high school, and I quickly devoured every single epic fantasy book that I could get my hands on. In fact, the very first (unpublished) book that I ever wrote back in college was an epic fantasy. That’s why I’m so thrilled to finally be writing my own epic fantasy series. KILL THE QUEEN is book #1 in my Crown of Shards series. KILL THE QUEEN focuses on Everleigh Blair, a royal who is distantly in line for the throne of Bellona, a kingdom steeped in gladiator tradition. But when the unthinkable happens, Evie finds herself fighting for her life—both inside and outside the gladiator arena. So the book is sort of like Gladiator meets Game of Thrones with a kick-butt heroine. If you are looking for a fantasy book with a strong heroine, plus lots of action, adventure, magic, and a healthy dose of romance, then you should check out KILL THE QUEEN. You can read the first chapter of KILL THE QUEEN on my website I hope that everyone enjoys getting to know Evie and all the other characters in KILL THE QUEEN. Happy reading! 🙂 New York Times bestselling author…

Steven James | The Final Chapter of The Bowers Files
Author Guest / September 10, 2018

It was 2005 and I was a frustrated wannabe novelist. I’d been wanting to write a thriller for years, but every time I started one, I found that my story wasn’t as fresh and original as I needed it to be. I was about ready to give up. Then one day, while researching investigative techniques, I stumbled across an article about geospatial investigation, a little known, cutting-edge way of analyzing the timing, location, and progression of serial crimes that the FBI was starting to use. It was unique, different, and perfect for my story. Everything began to click and FBI Special Agent Patrick Bowers was born. THE PAWN released in 2007 and my life would never be the same again. Since each book takes me around a year to research and write, chronicling Patrick’s adventures and cases has been a labor of love for more than a decade. And now, with the release of the eleventh and final book, EVERY WICKED MAN, the long-running series is coming to an end and it’s come time to say goodbye to my old friend. In my search for authentic locations and characters, writing this series has been a journey that has taken me…

Jenn McKinlay | Her Top Three Favorite Libraries
Author Guest / September 10, 2018

Asking a former librarian to tell you her favorite library is a lot like asking a mom who her favorite kid is. Impossible! I have been very fortunate to work and visit some of the coolest libraries in the world. Every single one of these jobs or tours has helped me write the library lover’s mysteries, which has its ninth title, HITTING THE BOOKS, coming out on September 11th! It’s so exciting to see this series and the characters within it develop with each new story, but I digress! My favorite library is… Yeah, no, I can’t choose so I’ll tell you my top three – in no particular order. First, there is the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University in New Haven, Conn. I was fortunate enough to do a tour of duty there while I was in library school and it was one of the most transformative experiences in my education. Housed in an iconic building, they have a collection which has to be seen to be believed. Samples of their holdings include works by Benjamin Franklin, John James Audubon, George Eliot, the Mellon Collection of Alchemy and the Occult, the Romanov family photo albums,…

Kathy Lyons | Guess how SLIDING HOME was born!
Author Guest / September 6, 2018

Yeah! Sliding Home releases to the world August 13. I’m so excited for this book, you have no idea. My editor likes this hero best because… (guess) He’s a fireman. Or he was until he became a hot baseball shortstop. He’s got family issues and who doesn’t? He seduces good girl Ellie in a really unusual balcony scene. She’s always had a thing for baseball players. In her words, “They have the best butts of anyone professional athlete.” Answer: All of the above! Yes my editor loves this book for a variety of reasons, all of which include the sexy hero, baseball yumminess, and his realistic family issues. The chemistry just worked right in the book. Plus, she loves how the book came to be. Guess where I got the idea for the heroine’s “Rejection Therapy” A backyard barbeque when every single person said a hard “No!” to my potato and avocado salad On the side of a tube of toothpaste. Some of us read everything including whatever’s hanging around the bathroom. So there it was on the side of a tube of Sensodyne. TED talks. It was a very learned (and fun) piece about wanting Olympic ring donuts and…
