Kat Martin | THE LAST MILE
Author Guest / July 18, 2022

Since my new book, THE LAST MILE, the second book in my Blood Ties Series, Gage Logan’s story, is set in Arizona, I thought it might be fun to talk about a place I’m only just getting to know. Most of the year, I spend my time in the mountains of Montana.  I’ve never been much of a desert person, but on a drive from California back to our Montana home, we took a detour that led us to Northern Arizona.  It’s far different from the rest of Arizona, over 5,000 feet in altitude, with mountains and pine trees all around.  So I felt a connection right away. We ended up buying a winter home there and as I grew to love the area, I decided I wanted to write a story set in that location.  Since I hadn’t written a treasure hunt book in years, one idea morphed into another and eventually became my new novel, THE LAST MILE. One of the most famous missing treasures, not just in Arizona, but the world, is the Lost Dutchman Mine.  The legend says it’s located in the harsh and dangerous Superstition Mountains of Arizona. But no matter how much I researched;…

Kacy Cross | Title Challenge: THE COWBOY’S SWEET REDEMPTION
Author Guest / July 15, 2022

Hi, I’m Kacy Cross, here with a fun way to tell you about THE COWBOY’S SWEET REDEMPTION. It’s a cute, sometimes funny, sometimes heart-breaking story about a dog trainer named Delilah who has never trained a dog and a grumpy ex-soldier cowboy who goes by the unlikely name of Zero, which is also exactly how many cows he owns (at first). They need each other but don’t know it yet. Fortunately, the dogs are pretty smart and spend a lot of time helping our hero and heroine get together. I’ve been tasked with making an acrostic with the letters from the title to tease you some about this amazing story.   T is for The Flying Pig, the name of Zero’s ranch. H is for Hunter, the name of Zero’s fatherless nephew, who needs a dog to be his friend. E is for eating, which something the Renshaw family does together, an oddity to Delilah, but she loves it.   C is for cows. Three, to be exact, which is how many Zero buys + one steer. The Stetson will now coming handy. O is for o’clock, a measurement of time and a specific allergy of Delilah’s. W is for…

Abigail Cutter | Exclusive Excerpt: LONG SHADOWS
Author Guest , Excerpt / July 15, 2022

Some might think there’s no life in the house, but I know otherwise. I’ve made friends with the mighty black snakes who take up winter residence. One has grown from a thin, stringy, mean-looking fellow to a thick band almost six feet long and round as my wrist. He enters the house when the days shorten by climbing the gnarled, vine-covered tree hovering over the back porch. Dropping from a low-leaning branch, he traverses the roof and stretches upward along the wood siding to enter the attic window, triangular snout tap-tapping, seeking entry. Hail has splintered the windowpanes, and he slides over the edge into the attic to hibernate. Sometimes he noses his way through the lime and horse-hair mortar on the central fireplace chimney and drops into the rooms below in search of mice. His compulsion is uncomfortably familiar, though in my case the brown river rat was my prey. Prisoners’ fare. So much time has passed, yet those months in a miserable Union prison camp are as real to me today as then. Famished, I slit my quarry from ear to naked tail, tossed aside the oozing hide, and punctured the pink, shiny body with a stick. Twisting…

Valerie Tejeda | 20 Questions: GOOD ON PAPER
Author Guest / July 15, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release? GOOD ON PAPER 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? GOOD ON PAPER follows a struggling journalist who is desperate to save her career. So much so, that she signs up to do a web series chronicling her wedding to her Internet famous fiancé in Cancún. The problem? The shows videographer is her former childhood best friend and the one who broke her heart. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? Part of the book takes place in the LA area (which is where I am originally from) and the second half takes place in Cancún, Mexico. Since I have Mexican heritage on my dad’s side, and Cancún would be a beautiful place for a televised wedding scenario, the second part of the book felt like a good fit there! 4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life? Yes! I’d love to have coffee with Jazmine, especially since our favorite coffee drinks are so similar. 5–What are three words that describe your protagonist? Ambitious. Old school. Stubborn. 6–What’s something you learned while writing this book? Writing these characters was such a great reminder that…

Rachel Graves Dishes on Demons and Her Strong Female Protagonist
Author Guest / July 14, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release? DUMPING HER DEMON 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? Demonology Professor Sarah Prescott left the demon of her dreams at the altar after he went human for her. Now, they’ll have to work together to solve her best friend’s murder and stop a group of rouge demons from ending the world. 3– Would you hang out with your heroine in real life? What’s she like? Sarah is a bit of a book worm with a crazy family life, so we’d have a few things in common. She’s someone who is focused on learning the rules and following them. Early on in her life, she learned those rules won’t always keep you safe. In response to that, she became a demonology professor, because demons always follow the rules. Her love of order and desire to keep things organized is something I can relate to. Along the same lines, researching the hierarchy of hell was one of the more interesting parts of writing this book. I’d love to have a demonology professor to explain all the different folklore and legends. But I’m not that organized so we might clash. Not to mention,…

Debra Jess | Exclusive Excerpt: DREAM OF MY SOUL
Author Guest , Excerpt / July 14, 2022

Excerpt from DREAM OF MY SOUL by Debra Jess. Copyright © 2022, Debra Jess, Corp. All rights reserved.   Marc retreated downstairs so the guard he’d replaced wouldn’t get suspicious. After what he’d just seen in the nursery—a mother rejecting her child—he didn’t feel quite so bad about snatching the kid. Just as he’d made it to the last step, he heard a door creak. Turning to look, he watched the baby’s mother stomp back into the room where she’d had the argument with her father and slam the door closed. “Hey, bud,” Marc tapped the other officer on the shoulder, “I’ve been ordered to make sure the mother doesn’t leave the house, so I’m going back upstairs, okay?” The other guard frowned. “Fine. I’m off shift in an hour. Make sure you’re back down here before—” BOOM CRASH “What the—” Before Marc could finish, a two-hundred-pound lumbering stack of mottled skin with a blank-eyed stare stepped through the cloud of flying splinters and jagged glass. Forced to raise his hands to keep from getting skewered, Marc could only see out of the corner of his eye. The other guard was in the same position, but only for a second….

Amalie Howard | 20 Questions: ALWAYS BE MY DUCHESS
Author Guest / July 13, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release? ALWAYS BE MY DUCHESS 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? Victorian era Pretty Woman meets Center Stage. An emotionally compromised, taciturn duke convinces a struggling, sassy French ballerina to take on a role as his fiancée for the season to convince an earl to sell him a piece of property, but ends up falling in love with her instead. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? Since it’s a historical novel set in the Victorian era with a British duke, the primary setting is England, but because the heroine is French, I couldn’t not have a scene or two in France. I consider Paris a second home. 4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life? Absolutely. Neve has a great sense of humor, she’s level-headed but also seems like she would be up for anything, and she’s loyal. My kind of friend. 5–What are three words that describe your hero? Astute, guarded, deeply caring. 6–What’s something you learned while writing this book? My hero took hefty inspiration from my son who is neurodivergent. I didn’t set out to write Lysander this way, but…

Katherine Grant Interview – Multilayered Characters in Romance
Author Guest / July 13, 2022

In your new book, THE GOVERNESS WITHOUT GUILT, your heroine Sophia Preston decides to become a governess. What inspired to create a governess character? Were you a JANE EYRE fan? Yes, I am a fan of Jane Eyre! Beyond that, I am really intrigued with how a woman could assert her independence in Regency England. Earning her own income as a governess is one way to do that. From the start, Sophia has yearned to be independent from her family because she feels different from them, and so she decided to become a governess. However, like many of us, by the start of the novel, she is disillusioned with her job, so the question becomes: are there any other options available to her?   Your hero, John Anderson, is a doctor. How would you describe his personality? John is a very caring, anxious person. When researching accoucheurs (the precursor to a modern OB-GYN), I was struck by how much of the care afforded aristocratic mothers was focused on creating psychological comfort, as opposed to actual medical interventions. That informed who John is – a person who reads the room to see how everyone is feeling and then reacts to do…
