This weekend my friend Yvonne has arrived from England. Whenever she comes it means a bunch of shopping for various items to go home with her, but it also means at least 2 trips to the bookstore. I love going to the bookstore with Yvonne, because while we have very similar taste, we also have very different tastes, and I never know what new treasure we’re going to discover for one of us. Welcome to the survey says part two! This week I want to know do you have a genre preference? If you do does that mean you are or are not willing to read outside that genre preference? I am mostly a contemporary reader be it suspenseful, romantic, or sexy. I don’t do many paranormals, but did read and truly enjoyed Dark Lover by J.R. Ward. I did read the second in the series, but it was not enjoyed as much as the first, and therefore the third is still waiting, as are most of the paranormal books on my shelf. November 2009On Sale: November 10, 2009Featuring: Noah Sark256 pages ISBN: 0763639850EAN: 9780763639853Hardcover$16.99 Young Adult Paranormal Buy at Amazon.com Angel In Vegas by Norma Howe The Chronicles Of Noah Sark Good heavens! A teen angel drops into Sin City in this wickedly funny YA novel from the author of the Blue Avenger trilogy. Who is Noah Sark, really? And what is he doing in the men’s room at Angelo’s Donut Shop in Las Vegas, Nevada? No use asking him; he doesn’t know. But he’s gambling that an assignment from above will shed some light — after all, a life depends on it! Only master satirist Norma Howe could craft a provocative meditation on free will from blending one (or maybe two) budding teen romances, a psychic fair, a dead frog, a headful of blond curls, and Las Vegas in all its glitz and kitsch (hello, Elvis!) with the dramatic backstory of Princess Diana in Paris. The jackpot? A wild and witty portrait of an unlikely guardian angel on a desperate mission to save a certain unknown girl from a certain unknown disaster. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! This year I thought I’d dispel some myths about me, even though I have spent hours in the kitchen today making four cheesecakes (two for my neighbor and two for the actual Turkey Day feast). There are people out there, including a few friends of mine, who are under the illusion that I’m a gourmet cook. This is only marginally true . . . any skills I have were acquired from watching my mom in the kitchen and then operating in a kind of “monkey see, monkey do” fog over the years. This weekend I find myself in need of comfort. A difficult decision was taken out of my hands, when my beloved pet, Sally passed away peacefully at home on Friday evening. Now, I need something to distract myself from her loss. I know many of you have what you consider to be comfort reads, and pull one of those from your keeper shelf and indulge. I however don’t have a keeper shelf per se…I have books I’ve kept because they’re autographed and not necessarily rereads time and time again. Lord Griffin Boscastle has no intention of ending his glorious career as a rakehell now that he has inherited a dukedom. Still, there are responsibilities he must discharge before his pleasures resume, including finding a bride, and depositing his incorrigible niece at a relative’s academy outside London. It is at this so-very-proper finishing school that flame-haired instructress Harriet Gardner awakens in Griffin emotions so dangerously intoxicating that he must avoid her at all cost. Yet when Harriet finds work in the townhouse where Griffin resides, her presence tempts him at every turn. Harriet has survived London’s streets far too long to let an arrogant duke woo a bride he doesn’t want when she desires him for herself, and she has seen too much of life not to recognize a man ripe for redemption. But just as Harriet finds the perfect cure for His Lordship’s devilish ways, a…
Hey ya’ll, welcome to Sharon’s Cozy Corner, where cozy mysteries and their authors are the focus of reviews, interviews and news. I am thrilled to be writing this first of hopefully many columns for Fresh Fiction, and I sincerely hope you, the reader, will enjoy it. Let’s start off looking at what exactly constitutes a “cozy mystery.” According to Wikipedia.org, a cozy mystery is “a subgenre of crime fiction in which sex and violence are downplayed or treated humorously.” The main characters of these types of mysteries are usually female and are amateur detectives who use their life experiences as a tool for solving crimes. They usually work in an area of interest to women, such as bakeries, tea rooms, scrapbook shops, etc. Often they have a husband, boyfriend, friend or family member working for the police force who can provide them with important information about a case to which they might not otherwise have access. I see cozy mysteries becoming one of the rising genres in women’s fiction today with more and more titles coming out each month, and more publishers adding cozy mysteries to their lineup. It’s an exciting time to explore this fascinating genre. So with no…
This week Kindred in Death by J.D.Robb was released this past week. I was lucky and got to read an early copy, so I didn’t need to make the tough decision to buy or to borrow. However, as the economy still stands in flux I couldn’t help but wonder if the pricing war that I’ve heard about regarding the preordering of certain books was effecting the number of holds at my local library. Earlier this year I did a blog about the number of holds on certain books, and really wasn’t surprised by what I had found, but this time I was amazed! My local library is ordering ten copies of Kindred In Death and as of the writing of this article should I want to place a hold I would be number sixteen. Should I have placed a hold on it on the day of release I would have been number ten. An online friend checked into placing a hold for Kindred in Death and found out that her library is getting four copies and she will be number thirteen on the hold list. Once upon a time the only place you saw movie trailers was in your local theater, shortly before the movie started. These days, all you have to do is “Google” to find a trailer for an upcoming movie—any upcoming movie. Have you looked around out there? Now it’s not just movies getting their thirty to forty-five seconds in the spotlight, but books too! I’ve been writing for…let’s just say many years, and I’ve seen many changes in publishing. One of the most interesting aspects of being a published author in 2009 is book trailers. I consider myself incredibly lucky that my husband Michael has the time, the talent and the staff to produce my trailers as well as my video newsletters. Normally, we’re very on the ball and the trailers are planned out way in advance of a book’s release so that it can be sent to online book retailers, but Rainwater sort of snuck up on us. You see, Simon & Schusterbought the manuscript and then decided it would make a great holiday book. Being an author of fiction, I suppose some people might find it hard to believe what I tell them at times. After all, I get paid to make things up. But in the online news today, I found an interesting post that was first reported by the BBC, that reminded me YOU CAN’T MAKE UP STUFF BETTER THAN REAL LIFE. A Somali man who claims to be 112 years old just got married. Now that’s a man who is optimistic about his future, but get this. He married a 17-year old girl-and he hopes to have more kids by her. The bride wouldn’t comment-no kidding (snort)-but her family told the press that she was “happy with her new husband” even though he is nearly a century older than she is.
