KATHRYNE KENNEDY | How to Undress an Eighteenth Century Gentleman
Author Guest / June 30, 2010

Hello again to all the Fresh Fiction readers! It sure is a pleasure to be back here, and I’m looking forward to hearing from all the kind people that I remember! I put together a simple cheat-sheet for writers about eighteenth century clothing, and I thought it might not only be a good guide for writers researching the era, but also a bit of fun for readers who love history (although you may want to note the changes I made because of the fantasy aspect of my world). So without further ado, here’s how you might go about undressing my hero, General Dominic Raikes, from my upcoming release The Fire Lord’s Lover 1. Shoes: First, let’s get Dominic comfortable be removing his shoes or boots. Like the women, men wore heeled shoes similar to our modern day clogs where you slip your foot in, but mostly of black with large buckles. The toes started out square, and went round by 1740. Pumps had low heels. I prefer my hero to wear boots, however, and many a military man wore them to a ball. I prefer the half jackboots, which ended below the knee in a turned-down top, made of leather….

She runs a vintage clothing store called Aunt Cora’s Closet and has the magical ability to sense vibrations of the past from clothing and jewelry. When students are spooked at the San Francisco School for the Arts, Lily is called in to search for paranormal activity. She finds a dead body–and a closet full of old clothes with some very bad vibes. Excerpt “I need something to guard against ghosts . . . ,” whispered the young woman slouching at the counter. She cast a nervous glance around my shop floor, empty but for racks upon racks of vintage clothes, cases of costume jewelry, and shelves lined with hats. “A protective . . . thingamajig.” “A talisman?” I asked. “That’s it.” “Talismans don’t really guard against ghosts, per se—” “Whatever.” She shrugged. “It’s better than nothing.” Her feathery bright pink hair put me in mind of a silly children’s toy, the kind…

PAMELA PALMER | The Challenge (and fun) of Writing a Series
Author Guest / June 29, 2010

The fourth book in my Feral Warrior shape-shifter series, RAPTURE UNTAMED, hits shelves today! Meanwhile, book five is off to the copyeditor and book six is staring back at me like a wide blank screen. Actually…it’s not. Which is one of the best things about writing a connected series of books. If I were simply starting a new book, an unconnected book, the sky would be the limit. And I very well might be staring at a blank screen, trying to decide what to write about, who to write about, the time period, the place, the people. But I’m writing book six. I already know most of the characters, I know the setting, the place and time, the secondary characters, the over-arching conflict. All that has been set-up in previous books. The Feral Warriors series isn’t simply a collection of romances set in the same world. It’s one big story with a beginning, a middle, and (eventually) an end. As I start working on each new book, I first look at where the story ended in the previous book. I’m not writing a new story so much as a new chapter of an on-going story. A chapter with a new…

Becky Pena | Meeting Alyson Noel … Tales from the Intern
Sundays with Sandi / June 27, 2010

I had an amazing adventure with the Fresh Fiction staff this past Thursday! I accompanied Gwen to my first ever author interview, with Alyson Noel, as Fresh Fiction’s official intern. I was so excited! After getting lost trying to find a Starbucks…Sara and Gwen found me on the way to the hotel that Alyson Noel was staying at. We had a 3 o’clock appointment for our video interview and were 10 minutes early to scout out different locations. We met Alyson in the lobby of the hotel and lucked out with conducting the interview in the hotel bar; Alyson was so fun, she joked about modeling against the table so we could get the mysterious atmosphere of the bar. Gwen forgot the camera tripod and luckily, she had me! This interview session I was “behind the scenes” on camera duty. The video interview was great; in my opinion, Alyson is really laid back and down to earth. She conversed with us as if she had known us for several days. What’s funny is that the video interview lasted a total of 7 minutes while the conversation we had afterwards lasted for more than an hour. We got sidetracked with talk…

Fresh Pick | MOONLIGHT ROAD by Robyn Carr

At age thirty-five. So she’s hitting the pause button on her life and holing up in a secluded (but totally upgraded, she’s not into roughing it) cabin near Virgin River. Erin is looking forward to really getting to know herself…not some shaggy-haired mountain man she meets wandering the woods. In fact, beneath his faded fatigues and bushy beard, Aiden Riordan is a doctor, recharging for a summer after leaving the Navy. He’s intrigued by the pretty, slightly snooty refugee from the rat race — meditating, journaling and definitely keeping him at arm’s length. He’d love to get closer…if his scruffy exterior and crazy ex-wife don’t hold him back. But maybe it’s something in the water — unlikely romances seem to take root in Virgin River…helped along with some well-intentioned meddling, of course. Another wonderful installment in the Virgin River series. Excerpt Chapter One In…
