Deporting unruly demons back to Hell is her specialty. Her personal life, on the other hand, could use a little work. The virtuous gene seems to be missing in this particular Angel, getting Abby into more trouble than she likes to admit. To date, her biggest vice has been SimĂ©on Keller, a half-demon/half-human, who effortlessly managed to seduce Abby five years ago. She’s avoided him ever since but can’t seem to knock the bad reputation the blunder has branded on her. Now the threat of a demon rebellion has Angels, Inc. overwhelmed and Abby must trust SimĂ©on to help her find the fiends threatening to destroy Earth’s only salvation. Staying out of SimĂ©on’s bed is the least of her worries as she fights for the lives of all Angels and humans everywhere. Previous Picks

HOPE TARR | THE TUTOR
Author Guest / July 21, 2010

What would you do if you knew you had seven sexy days and nights in your very near future? We’re talking passion so scalding, so unbridled, and so primal that most mortals never know the like. The catch: those same seven sexy days and nights are most likely going to have to last you the rest of your life. Oh, and you’re not quite twenty-one which means “the rest of your life” promises to be a very, very long time. Lady Bea Lindsey confronts that very scenario in THE TUTOR, my Victorian-set romance published with Harlequin’s super sexy Blaze line. At the opening of THE TUTOR, Bea has gotten herself engaged to a very nice, very dull gentleman. Conventional wisdom counsels that a young woman on the cusp of twenty-one, in this case a young woman of noble birth, purse-poor dowry, and an impulsive nature, dare we say “wild streak” should settle down safely and quickly. But conventional wisdom is not always…wise. And Bea is very much a modern girl-modern in the context of the 1890’s. She may be willing to settle for a dry-as-toast husband at the dining table but when it comes to the boudoir, she is going…

ALAYA JOHNSON | The Sidekick
Author Guest , Guests / July 20, 2010

Let’s talk about sidekicks. I don’t know about you, but I love them. Best friends, sympathetic rivals, brothers, sisters–sometimes even mothers and fathers–are key figures in the lives of most main characters. In mystery and paranormal fiction, where the heroine is usually in way over her head, they can help her fight her way out. And, to me, there are few things I enjoy more than a really well-depicted friendship in fiction. Partly this is because paranormal fiction especially, and mystery to a lesser extent, tend to place a lot of emphasis on the romantic lead and complications thereof. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of romance, but it’s always a little disappointing to me when it seems to get in the way of Our Heroine having, well, real friendships. Especially with other women. If I found myself inexplicably at the center of (say) some centuries-old war between vampires and werewolves, you bet that my sister would be on the phone in five seconds, and she’d be on the train to come and help me in less than a day. That’s just how my relationships with my female friends work. We’re there for each other, and we have…

Fresh Pick | HE CALLS HER DOC by Mary Brady
Fresh Pick / July 19, 2010

May 2009 On Sale: May 12, 2009 Featuring: Maude DeVane; Guy Daley 256 pages ISBN: 0373715617 EAN: 9780373715619 Mass Market Paperback $5.50 Add to Wish List Romance Contemporary Buy at Amazon.com 2010 RITA Finalist for Best First Book He Calls Her Doc by Mary Brady The town isn’t big enough for both of them… Maude DeVane is home in Montana to prove to the set-in-their-ways townsfolk that she’s the doctor they need. What she doesn’t need is an arrogant E.R. physician competing on her own turf. Especially if he’s Guy Daley. Five years ago they shared a kiss she’s been trying to forget ever since. And that’s not possible with Guy here raising his teenage niece and spending far too much time at Maude’s clinic. It’s like a prescription to fall for him again. Worse, Guy’s presence is not helping her with the townsfolk. How can she be their GP if they seek him for treatment? And if she has to leave the valley behind, will she lose her chance to find healing…and love? Two Docs are Better Than One! Previous Picks

Interview Elizabeth Spann Craig / Riley Adams

Summertime means having fun, being lazy and eating lots of good food – at least it does around my house! And around my house, with four big ol’ boys to feed, we love and eat a lot of barbeque! So I was so pleased to find out my good friend, Elizabeth Spann Craig, has written a new cozy mystery series featuring – barbeque! Writing as Riley Adams, her first book in the “Memphis BBQ Mysteres,” DELICIOUS AND SUSPICIOUS, debuts this month, and Elizabeth was kind enough to stop by to answer a few questions about her writing career and her love of cozy mysteries! Sharon: At what age did you know that you wanted to be a writer? Elizabeth: Sharon, I wish I could say that I had other career options! But writing is the only thing I can do…and I found that out at an early age. Probably by second grade, definitely by fourth grade. My father is an English teacher, and so I think the writing came naturally to me. Sharon: How did you get interested in writing “cozy” mysteries? Elizabeth: Cozies, or traditional mysteries, are my favorite mysteries to read. I cut my teeth on Nancy Drew…

Uncovering Myths and Legends – MythCon
Shanna's Road Journal / July 19, 2010

I recently attended Mythcon 41, which was a real change from the kind of conventions and conferences I usually go to. This was more of an academic conference, sponsored by the Mythopoeic Society. The focus of this organization is on mythopoeic literature, or transformative mythology, which is the incorporation or transformation of mythology into other stories. The society particularly studies the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams and other members of the Inklings group at Oxford University. The conference included a variety of academic paper presentations, as well as some panel discussions, and I was invited as a guest author to speak on some of the panels about writing fantasy fiction. The attendees seemed to be a mix of academics, fantasy fiction fans, writers and people who enjoy this topic as a personal interest. I was on one panel with authors A. Lee Martinez (author of DIVINE MISFORTUNE) and Tim Powers (author of THE ANUBIS GATES and THREE DAYS TO NEVER), discussing the topic of whether fantasy fiction should be realistic. The initial response from many of us was “Huh?” because realism and fantasy don’t seem to go together. But as we discussed, we came to the conclusion…

Jen’s Jewels | Interview with Deborah Clearman
Jen's Jewels / July 19, 2010

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to start anew, even for just a few weeks, in a foreign country? A new identity, new customs to learn, and most especially a new lease on life! I guess if I really wanted to know the ins and outs, I could ask the members of the Russian spy ring! All kidding aside, life sometimes seems so fast-paced and all-consuming that it is difficult to find time to stop and smell the roses. This month’s Jen’s Jewels Deborah Clearman addresses this very topic in her debut novel, TODOS SANTOS. Set in Guatemala, it’s the story of one woman’s plight to start anew while coming face to face with adversity in the jungles of a third world country. Beautifully written with the richness of the countryside accenting the backdrop of her tale, it’s a novel worth the read. As part of this interview, Black Lawrence Press has generously donated five copies for you, my favorite readers, to try to win. So, don’t forget to look for the trivia question at the end. And as always, thanks for making Jen’s Jewels a part of your reading adventure. Jen: In order to truly appreciate…
