As both a reader and writer of romance, I have one major pet peeve: overbearing heroes. Sure, some “Alpha” males can’t seem to help themselves, but no means no, even if it’s something small like walking a lady home. I try not to write the kinds of heroes who don’t take no for an answer, especially when it’s something major. However, my gargoyles were created not only as full-grown men, but as protectors of an entire kingdom and all of the citizens within. Inspiration is a funny thing. It is sometimes found in the oddest of places and often leads us down paths we never saw coming. Such was the case for my upcoming psychological suspense novel, Fractals. My ideas generally start small. This one born of my own fascination with an article about the microscopic topography of tears and the life events that might influence those tears. But it wasn’t until a conversation with a former student sparked life into my main character, Carly Dalton, and with her came the driving force of this novel: trauma. We all experience trauma to varying degrees, and I’ve not shied away from it in my Blood Secrets Series, but I knew from the start that this story was different. My heroine was a teenager and my hero her teacher, their relationship taboo from the start. And although Fractals is not a romance, it does straddle the line of moral code on more than one occasion, which was a risk from the start. But one thing I’ve learned is that when a character begs for her story to be told, as an author it’s my job to ignore the risks and set pen to paper. Unlike…

Jen: What inspired you to write ACCIDENTALLY ENGAGED? Farah: Reena came to me a few years ago. I’ve always loved food and wanted to write a food blogger character. When I wrote my debut, THE CHAI FACTOR, I used my food blogger character as the main character’s best friend, intending to go back to her for my next book. I loved the character so much and knew that the love interest that I paired her with had to be worthy of her, so I created the food-loving, equally adorable, and sexy Nadim for her. Reena’s parents have always been overbearing, so I knew an arranged marriage, or facilitated marriage trope would make sense, but I’ve always loved a fake relationship. The end result is an arranged marriage/fake relationship romance full of family, food, and lots and lots of love.   How does Reena feel about the art of baking? Like so many of us, baking is a stress reliever for Reena. She feels that she doesn’t have a lot of control in her life. She’s unsatisfied at work, her romantic life is a disaster, and her best friend has moved away. And her parents are well-meaning, but far too intrusive…

I have a confession to make. I’m in love with someone other than my husband, and it’s a woman. Her name is Reine, and we’ve been spending a lot of time together. I’m pretty into her gargoyle boyfriend, too. When I started writing novels, I switched to a different main point of view character or pair of characters in each book in my series. With the Fae Files, I decided to follow one fascinating character and her love interest through the entire series. I originally had it planned to be three books, a trilogy, but as it turned out, Reine the exiled Fae princess was just too fascinating, so I’m currently working on book four. What makes Reine interesting? All of my books have themes of identity and self-acceptance, and Reine definitely struggles with those. At the start of the series, Reine is in exile in the Earth realm. She considers herself to be 100% Fae, but she doesn’t realize how much her time among humans has influenced her. I’ve enjoyed exploring this conflict, not only as it applies to her, but to her relationships as well. The slow burn romance also ended up being more complicated than I anticipated….

But what I found is that a quiet person can also have a backbone of steel, especially when it’s important. 5–Why will readers love your hero?  Samael is made of honor from head to toe.
